Tim Thomas Sets Save Percentage Record

When the Bruins game against the Devils ended this afternoon, it meant an end to the B's 2010-11 regular season, and also that Tim Thomas has officially entered into the record books. Thomas, who didn't play in today's 3-2 loss, broke the NHL record for highest save percentage in a single season: .938. The new mark breaks the 12-year old record of Dominik Hasek (.937), which he set in the 1998-99 season as a member of the Sabres. The milestone is a nice cap to a sensational regular season for Thomas, one in which he finished 35-11-9 with a 2.00 goals against average, 9 shutouts, and was selected as an All Star. Along with leading the league in save percentage, he was also tops in both GAA and points per start (1.44) as well. Despite several other strong candidates for the award, it would be a a surprise if TT the Bear does not take home his second Vezina Trophy in 3 years for his fine work. Congratulations Timmy, on a fine regular season and a very impressive record!

What sticks out here....

1. Tim Thomas has 2 of the top 3 save % seasons in NHL history.

2. The current Bruins goalies have led the league in save % for 3 years in a row and have 3 of the top 8 seasons in NHL history.

3. Aside from Dominik Hasek, Thomas is the only person in the top 15 multiple times.

4. Hasek has 5 of the 15 best seasons in NHL history, and is the only from before the 2001-02 season to make the list.

5. There are 10 different goalies on the list and 4 of them are from Finland and have gotten on within the past 8 years....impressive.

Martin Brodouer is the greatest goalie I ever saw play and he is not on the list.

How about some MVP consideration for Thomas?

That Buffalo team made it to the Stanley Cup Finals based largely on Hasek as the rest of the team kind of was average.
Best players outside of Hasek were Satan and Pecca.

How "dominant" was Hasek in the mid 90's? This is crazy to look at like this...From 93-94 through 98-99 he had 5 of the 15 best save percentages of all time in a row. Wow!
