Mid-Week Miscellaneous

As always there is plenty to discuss in this edition of Mid-Week Miscellaneous.....UFC makes it's Boston debut Saturday night at the Garden, and brings a terrific card to town. B.J. Penn takes on Frankie Edgar for the Lightweight Championship, Randy Couture fights boxing crossover James Toney, and New England natives Kenny Florian, Joe Lauzon and Marcus Davis will also be part of the UFC 118 card. Good luck to all the locals!.....Speaking of events at the Garden, the WWE will celebrate it's 900th episode of Monday Night Raw in Boston this coming Monday.....Manny Ramirez was placed on waivers by the Dodgers. While it will be interesting to see if there are any takers for him, I am nearly positive that the Red Sox would not be willing to take the same chance in welcoming Manny back that they were willing to take with Johnny Damon.....PGA golfer Jim Furyk overslept the pro-am event at The Barclays yesterday, and it cost him a spot in the actual tournament this weekend. Since this was the 1st of 4 FedEx Cup playoff events, Furyk (#3 in the rankings) as been eliminated from the chase before it ever began. Clearly he shouldn't have missed the pro-am, but it doesn't seem like the punishment matches the crime here.....these and any other topics on your sports mind are open for discussion right here in MWM....

Appears NFL owners are very serious about extending the NFL's regular season schedule from 16 to 18 games in 2012. Will be interesting to see if the players go along with this one....and if they do, what concessions the owners need to make in return.

Unfortunately, as was the case when the season went from 14 to 16 games, it would end up rendering all prior records completely useless/obsolete.

However, if the trade off is 2 less exhibition games I'd be all for it...I'm ready for the regular season now!

Classy story.....

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- An Oregon State University offensive lineman has been dismissed from the team after police say they found him naked and intoxicated in a stranger's home and had to use stun guns to take him into custody.

Corvallis police say they received the call about a naked intruder early Sunday.

Responding officers ordered 19-year-old Tyler Patrick Thomas of Kalispell, Mont., to get on the ground, Lt. Tim Brewer said.

Thomas refused and instead dropped into a three-point stance like a football player and lunged at the officers, Brewer said. At that point, he said, two officers fired their stun guns.

Brewer said Thomas "absolutely was intoxicated" at the time.

Thomas was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass, criminal mischief and resisting arrest. He was booked into the Benton County jail and later released.

A home phone listing for Thomas couldn't be found.

Oregon State coach Mike Riley dismissed Thomas from the team Monday, OSU athletics spokesman Steve Fenk said. Thomas redshirted during the Beavers' 2009 season.

Phil Mickelson made an excellent point about the Furyk disqualification. Only about 55 of the 125 players in the tournament play in the pro-am. Thus, it seems unfair that a rule exists that could possibly cost a small percentage of the field in a major way (as it did here) while 70 players run no risk of suffering any consequences at all.

I'd like to call that 19 year old from Oregon an idiot for what he did, but I am afraid it would be hypocritical. Some of the things I did when I was 19 years old I would not want printed anywhere. I kind of feel sorry for the kid.

The MMA event at the Garden is not sold out and Dana White is surprised...seriously? The ticket prices are ridiculous. What does he expect? I was hoping to go, but I was very disappointed at the sky high prices and I am hoping they don't sell out.
-UFC 118 is going for an average ticket price of $288.
-UFC 118 ticket prices are 132.3 percent higher than UFC 119 ticket prices, which are currently $124 on average.
-Ticket prices range from $75 to $600. Who would pay $75 for back row balcony seats? I don't mind them trying to gouge the rich people who will either get comped with the $600 tickets or write them off, but the low end tickets being so expensive is ridiculous. Come on Dana White, stop scamming the poor people that made this sport as popular as it it.

Good info on the UFC tix WJ. I was also shocked/disappointed at how expensive they were. I still know quite a few people who shelled out big bucks to go, but I guess I'm just not a big enough fan of MMA for it to be worth it to me.

Looks like the UFC event was a bit of a letdown. The locals went 1 for 3 (Lauzon with the only win), Cature won in the 1st round and Penn lost easily by unanimous decision. Not much drama.

james tony did a great job self promoting because it honestly seemed like he had a shot right up until the fight began

I am a huge fan of Rick Reilly as a writer, he is probably my favorite sports writer.
The other day I heard him as the anchor on Sports Center....he was God awful. I mean really terrible to the point I had to change the channel. It reminded me of a college freshman trying to do sports for the college station. He needs to stick to writing.
