Theo Epstein today made official what has been rumored for days, announcing that the Red Sox have inked starting pitcher Josh Beckett to a 4-year contract extension worth $68 million. The deal will keep the 29-year old Beckett, who was scheduled to become a free agent after this season, in Boston through 2014. The Sox now have Beckett, Jon Lester, John Lackey and Clay Buchholz all either under contract or under the team's control through the end of the 2014 season. Now in his 5th season with the Sox, Beckett has a 65-34 regular season record for Boston with a 4.08 ERA. His .657 winning percentage with the Red Sox is 7th best in franchise history (sandwiched between Babe Ruth at .659 and Curt Schilling at .646). In 3 postseasons with the Sox he is a combined 5-1 with a 3.88 ERA, including a 4-0 record and 1.20 ERA in 2007 when he won ALCS MVP and helped Boston win the World Series. Now Beckett has at least 5 more years with the Red Sox, including 2010, to add to his ring collection.

I'm a huge fan of the move. Beckett is a legit ace and will still be just 34 when his deal is up.
I also love keeping some core players for a sense of continuity instead of getting used to a new cast every year.
I love the move all around.
