Celts Notes: Boston Bench Unacceptable

In this edition of the Boston Celtics Weekly Post I attempted to come up with a legitimate reason for the C's struggles of late. My analysis leads me back to the Boston bench, where this year's crop has been downright disappointing. In 2008 the Boston bench was solid when called upon, mostly because they were not called upon often. P.J. Brown and Eddie House had defined roles which they excelled in during short spurts. The only bench player with an expanded role was James Posey, who filled his role well. This year much more is being asked of the bench due to both injuries and attempting to limit minutes for some aging starters, but the bench is still built for only limited roles in short spurts. The bench player who could fill a more expanded role was Marquis Daniels, who has been injured for some time. Rasheed Wallace has not offered an inside presence on offense or defense, yet his minutes have not diminished. No other player has been consistent enough to be a difference maker. If this does not change the starters are going to have to take on more minutes once again, something I no longer know if they're capable of.....Also this week: Ray Allen for Monta Ellis?.....Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo join Kevin Garnett as East All Stars.....How has getting swept by the Magic, Hawks and Lakers last week affected your confidence?.....these and any other issues involving our favorite basketball team are open for discussion right here!.....

Disappointing on Boston bench:
Rasheed Wallace
Glen Davis
Marquis Daniels
Brian Scalabrine

Giving what is expected:
Eddie House
Shelden Williams

Giving more than expected:
Tony Allen

That is 1 of 7 bench players giving more than what was expected this year....that's not good.

I am not all that confident at this point. No where near where I was at earlier/other points in the season.

We look old.

Don Nelson laughed at the Monta Ellis rumor, though it does make sense to some degree. Definitely worth shopping Ray, but not giving him away.

Trading-wise, I have confidence in Danny Ainge.

... and there were VERY LOW expectations for that overachiever.

Rondo & Pierce were both no-brainers to make the All Star team. The only real "snub" seemed to be Josh Smith, but that's what happens when the starters are voted on by the fans and Allen Iverson wastes a spot.

Pierce was also just named to the 3-point shootout....

This past week the Celtics are 3-0...granted those wins were against the Wizards, Heat and Nets.

At this point they look like a team that will:

1. Easily make the playoffs.
2. Likely win in the first round.
3. Have a 40% chance of escaping the 2nd round.
4. Have a 20% chance of winning the East.
5. Having a 10% chance of winning it all.

10-to-1 isn't bad...just not for a team that was thinking about breaking all-time wins records when this season began.

Hosting the Magic tomorrow at 2:30. I think that's a big game confidence-wise just to show they can still beat the class teams of the league.

Scattered and pent-up thoughts from too long w/o Celtics posts: I am so surprised by Tony Allen--I've been saying for ages that he would never amount to anything, but he's been great the last couple weeks. And Rasheed has been so frustrating. I have to agree with Luke that we look old--we're making *everything* look difficult, even New Jersey last night! I think of all the recent losses, the LA one was the worst. The players started hanging their heads and looking like they'd lost when we were up 6 with about a minute and a half left! I'll be at the Orlando game tomorrow, so I hope that goes well...

I feel like the players think that if they can just be healthy for the playoffs they will be OK and that that the regular season is not that big of a deal. Maybe they feel that way after last year's regular season record/Garnett injury/playoff struggles.
I don't think that is a sound theory, but I hope it works if that is what they are doing.

Great having Paul Pierce and Marquis Daniels back today!

I also like Dwight Howard stating that Perk is the toughest defender he has to face in the entire league.

What the heck happened? I turned on the Bruins for a little bit and they are down by 15.

Orlando outscored Boston 36-11 in the 3rd quarter? How is that even possible?

The third quarter was terrible. Does anyone know why Perk didn't play at all in the fourth? Rasheed was really annoyingly ineffectual today.
