Red Sox Sign Adrian Beltre

ESPN is reporting that the Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement with free agent third baseman Adrian Beltre. The deal would guarantee Beltre $9 million for 2010, with a $5 player option for 2011 and a $1 buyout. At this point it appears finalizing the deal is simply contingent on Beltre passing a physical. The 30-year old Dominican is a career .270 hitter with 250 home runs in 11 major league seasons spent with the Dodgers and Mariners. His best offensive year was 2003 with L.A. when he hit .334 with 48 home runs and 121 RBI and finished 2nd in the N.L. MVP voting. Last season with Seattle he hit .265 with 8 HR and 44 RBI in 111 games. Beltre was the A.L. Gold Glove winner at 3B in both 2007 & 2008 and would be a major upgrade for Boston defensively. It will be interesting to see if Theo is done tinkering with the roster for now or if there will be more movement (Mike Lowell?) before spring training. Welcome to Boston Adrian!

Potential 25-man roster.....

C - V.Martinez
1B - K.Youkilis

CF - M.Cameron
RF - J.Drew
3B - A.Beltre
SS - M.Scutaro

Bench (4)
C - J.Varitek
1B - C.Kotchman
IF - J.Lowrie
OF - J.Hermida

Starting Rotation (5)
J.Beckett
J.Lester

C.Buchholz
D.Matsuzaka

Bullpen (7)
D.Bard
M.Delcarmen
H.Okajima
J.Papelbon
R.Ramirez
B.Bosner
S.Atchison

Notes:
1. This leaves out both Tim Wakefield and Mike Lowell. Both could end up on the roster, but some movement elsewhere on the roster would likely be needed first.

2. Jed Lowrie was projected to start the year at Pawtucket, but the Sox currently have no other potential utility infielder under contract.

3 gold glovers in the infield yet again.

This current lineup makes the scutaro pickup look much better than re-signing gonzo

The Rest of the 40, now at capacity, roster:

Pitchers: Felix Doubront LHP, Dustin Richardson LHP, Fabio Casto LHP, Tim Wakefield RHP, Robert Manuel RHP, Ramon A. Ramirez RHP, J. Tazawa RHP, Michael Bowden RHP

Postional Players: C-Mark Wagner, C-Dusty Brown, IF Julio Iglesias, OF Josh Reddick, 1B Aaron Bates, 3B Mike Lowell, Tug Hulett IF

Obviously, they will re-visit the Lowell trade after the surgery and the battle for a bullpen spot will be interesting as well as the last bench spot. No doubt that they are going to bring in a bunch of minor league veterans with major league experience as well. So this will change again and again and again.

Perhaps Julio Iglesias can sing the national anthem for us. I heard that Jose Iglesias is a pretty awesome defensive shortstop, probably 2 years away (or so).

I'm glad my headline didn't involve saying "Yo, Adrian!". I've seen it like 20 times....super lame.

Glad to see you're back up and running.

I hope Beltre's lack of production had more to do with being a Mariner than with him being lame and mediocre...like his stats. Yay! He's a good fielder, but we need some pop in our lineup...
