Pats Notes: 2010 AFC East Favorites?

Despite the season being over, there is still plenty to discuss in this edition of the New England Patriots Weekly Post.....Since winning the Super Bowl in 2001 the Pats have not won the AFC East every season, but as far as I can remember they have been the pre-season division favorites every year. Will that change in 2010? With the Jets appearing to return all key players and the Pats possibly being without several important players (i.e. Wes Welker), it would seem Rex Ryan's team will end the Pats streak.....The first 2010 NFL Mock Draft from Mel Kiper Jr. has the Patriots taking Clemson DE/OLB Ricky Sapp at #22.....Despite Welker, Tom Brady and Randy Moss all pulling out of the Pro Bowl for injury reasons, the Pats will still be represented by Logan Mankins, Vince Wilfork and Brandon Meriweather.....these and any other topics involving our favorite football team are open for discussion right here!

1. Too early to pick an AFC East favorite for next season now. I have a feeling the Pats roster that begins next season will be far different than the one that ended this one. However, if the Jets do win the Super Bowl (yikes) they should be the favorites regardless of what the Pats do.

2. I'm still hoping for Sergio Kindle from Texas if we stay at #22, but I'd rather see them trade up and try to get Alabama's Rolando McClain.

3. Will I watch the Pro Bowl? With no Pats skill position players, probably not.

I might live in a fantasy world, but here are a few moves that I would like to see them make this offseason...

1. Draft a tough pass rusher to play DE in the first round... regardless if they trade up or down, just stay in the 1st round

2. Trade Moss and a 1st round pick next year to Denver for Marshall... highly unlikely, but just a thought.

3. Sign thomas Jones (likely to be cut by the Jets this offseason), and have Maroney be the #2 back. Hopefully by bringing in some verteran leadership ahead of him we can still salvage his career, and he can be a good #1 in the next 2-3 years.

4. The 2nd and 3rd round should be dedicated to drafting 1 CB, 1 DE/OLB (opposite of what they draft in the 1st rd.), and some interior OL.

I also think it is necessary to keep Light despite his contract this year. Like I said, I might live in a fantasy world, but its just a thought.

Thomas Jones is good.

We wouldn't give up Moss for another guy with "attitude problems."

What do you mean you "might"

1. Draft a tough pass rusher to play DE in the first round... regardless if they trade up or down, just stay in the 1st round

do NOT trade down! This strategy is not working. We need highly skilled guys

2. Trade Moss and a 1st round pick next year to Denver for Marshall... highly unlikely, but just a thought.

Gotta agre 100% with Luke. Marshall seems like a much bigger problem than Moss. As much as Moss is perceived to have an attitude problem his coaches and teammates seem to like him. Marshall's coach and teammates seem to hate him

3. Sign thomas Jones (likely to be cut by the Jets this offseason), and have Maroney be the #2 back. Hopefully by bringing in some verteran leadership ahead of him we can still salvage his career, and he can be a good #1 in the next 2-3 years.

What will we do with Fred Taylor?

4. The 2nd and 3rd round should be dedicated to drafting 1 CB, 1 DE/OLB (opposite of what they draft in the 1st rd.), and some interior OL.

Despite you thinking that the Pats only draft immediate Pro Bowlers, these 2 players are likely to make little or no impact next year, much like most of the recent picks

I also think it is necessary to keep Light despite his contract this year. Like I said, I might live in a fantasy world, but its just a thought.

The most correct thing you have ever written "I might live in a fantasy world" although "might" should be replaced with "definitely"

WJ, you are a nerd and I beat people like you up in high school...

1. Why would you not want to trade #22 in the first round for #32 and a 2nd rd pick next year? Is there going to be much of a drop in 10 picks?

2. I said this was highly unlikely, but this was just a thought because McDaniels worked well with Moss and he left here on good terms with BB. Since we will most likely need some veteran leadership for our young receivers it just seemed like a slight possibility. With a change of scenery Moss might be dominant again for a year, and with a change in scenery Marshall might be on his best behavior for a year.

3. Same thing they did with Fred Taylor this year...

4. I never said I think they draft immediate pro bowlers... but suddenly their recent draft picks aren't looking too bad. Did Mayo and guyton make immediate impacts last year, what about Edelman this year? Butler? I think it is certainly possible for players to make immediate impacts.

Since we're on the topic of living in a fantasy world.. Here's is what i would like to see:

1. Trade our 1st rd (#22) and our first 2nd rd (#44) to St. Louis for the #1 overall.

2. Draft Ndamukuong Suh

3. trade back into the first rd (player and pick from next year) to draft Sergio Kindle

4. win Super Bowl Next year
---------------------------------------
I dont think we need to draft a RB this year. We will have 2 1st rd pick next season. The pick we get from Oakland will be a top 10 pick because they suck and still will next year. Draft Mark Ingram next year. He will enter the draft next year.

I don't know, you tell me:

2009 draft #22 Percy Harvin
#32 Ziggy Hood

2008 draft #22 Felix Jones
#32 Phillip Merling

How would Percy Harvin or Felix Jones look in a Patriots uniform?

Don't make me go through the picks over the last 5 years. There have been a lot more misses than hits.
2009 in order of being drafted:
Round 2 - Chung, was he on the roster this year? And just to prove my previous point we traded DOWN out of the first round. We gave #23 to Baltimore who ended up being Michael Oher. Perhaps you have heard of him... there was a freakin movie made about him! He started every game at OL on the team that destroyed the Pats. Glad we traded out of round one.

Round 2 still - Who the hell is Ron Brace?

Round 2 again - Butler, let's not forget he was a healthy scratch twice, but I will concede that he looks like he can play CB in the NFL, but he was a second round pick, he didn't amaze anybody or make a difference.

Round 2 once again - Sebastian Vollmer might turn out to be the best pick in the last 5 years....might.

ROund 3 - Brandon Tate, miss
Tyrone McKenzie, who?

Round 4 - Rich Ohrnberger, played 3 games (this is the Ellis Hobbes pick)

Round 5 - George Bussey, 0 games

Round 6 - Jake Ingram, actually a useful player as far as long snappers go.

Round 6 - Myron Pryor, he made the team and his dad Richard was very funny

Round 7 - Julian Edelman, homerun

Round 7 -Darryl Richard, last round you can't expect much

Maybe the Pats should trade all the way down to round 6 and 7 from now on.

absolutely not... you are making their draft sound much worse to try to prove your point.

1. the only reason you know of Michael Oher is because their was a movie made about him. Did you know that he allowed Joe Flacco about 2.25 second to throw on average? Definitely a great pick!!!

2. Round 2 - Chung, was he on the roster this year? And just to prove my previous point we traded DOWN out of the first round. We gave #23 to Baltimore who ended up being Michael Oher. Round 2
Brace - Definitely underperformed

Butler - If he had 15 tackles and 3 int's a game that would not be good enough for you

Chung - Did you see him on special teams. I dont know this from experience, but I think it is probable pretty hard to get significant playing time as a rookie with a pro bowl safety and last years starter ahead of you.

Vollmer - You were ready to crown this guy rookie of the year earlier this year, now he might turn out to be ok... You have more mood swings that a chick.

ROund 3 -
Brandon Tate - you are ready to call him a miss?
Tyrone McKenzie - tore his ACL at rookie mini camps... keep your eye out for him next year though... he might contribute to solving our LB problems

You can not expect much out of rounds 4-7 in their first few years. Out of curiosity what did you think of Samuel after year one? What about Eugene Wilson... You realize that Wilson was starting over Samuel for the first couple of years... right?

Felix Jones - Less than 700 yds and 3 touchdowns! Get him to the pro bowl. That is insane production!!! Forget about signing Thomas Jones... BB has his answer at RB

Yes I would rather have philip merling - a DE that made 33 tackles this year
