The Red Sox (69-51) welcome Jerry Remy back to the booth just in time for a weekend series with the team holding MLB's best record, the New York Yankees (76-45). Since the John Smoltz era ended in Boston, the Red Sox have won 7 of 10 games and the heart of the order has been rejuvenated at the plate. In a weekend of interesting pitching match ups, the Sox start Brad Penny (7-7, 5.22 ERA) tonight. Penny has allowed 19 earned runs in 22.2 innings in his last 4 starts, but he did shut out the Yankees through 6 strong innings at Fenway on June 11th. Given the potential upcoming returns of both Dice-K and Wake, this is absolutely the biggest start of the season for Penny. The Yankees counter with the red hot Andy Pettitte (9-6, 4.09 ERA) who has allowed just 4 earned runs in 26 innings over his last 4 starts. There is a new fire in the Red Sox these days and a win tonight would be a satisfying way to begin a weekend. Let's go Red Sox!

Sox call up Michael Bowden. Good to have bullpen reinforcements.
Friggin' Penny is already looking dicey...still in the first 2-0 Yanks...he did strike out Godzirra...but he's looks bad...I'm scared...
Nice after a lead off walk, a steal, and a fly out - Ellsbury scores on a VMart sac fly...2 outs...2-1 Yanks
then Youk strikes out to end inning...that said, Pettite looked worse than Penny, control-wise...should be a painful game
Penny sucks...6-1 Yanks, in the 2nd
Red Sox score 11 runs!!!
AND LOSE!!
Penny and Bowden...not the best performances. If Tazawa pitches well tomorrow...I can't see Penny getting another start given Wake coming back soon and Dice K's return soon. However...we need the September 1 40 man roster situation so we have Penny as insurance.
20-11. Sox lose. Yanks are the best team in baseball (regular season). They do have some issues though...to be discussed soon.
