With Jed Lowrie injured again (left forearm) the Red Sox have added some insurance in the form of this week's Free Agent Friday feature: Chris Woodward. After being designated for assignment by the Mariners on Tuesday (he had his .239, 0 HR, 5 RBI for Seattle), Woodward finds himself going from unemployed to in the playoff hunt in a matter of days. With Julio Lugo gone, Lowrie injured and Nick Green struggling (.233 in June, .143 in July, 0 for his last 16) is it possible that the 33-year old journeyman (Blue Jays, Mets, Braves, Mariners) could find himself the Sox starting shortstop before this 2009 season is through? As much as that seems unappealing, there also may not be any better options out there. Perhaps a shortstop should have been a bigger trade deadline priority for Theo so that our playoff hopes weren't hinging on a Green/Woodward platoon down the homestretch.
