Although the Patriots had bigger name free agent signings this past off season (such as Fred Taylor, Joey Galloway and Shawn Springs) the most impressive of the Pats signings in last night's preseason opener was this week's featured player in Free Agent Friday: Chris Baker. Last night the 6'3" 258-pound Baker proved a reliable option for Tom Brady in the red zone, scoring on receptions of 4 and 9 yards. That type of production will help separate Baker from his tight end competition: incumbent Ben Watson, Dave Thomas and fellow free agent Alex Smith. While all should make the club, their roles and playing time could vary greatly...and Baker did a good job last night attempting to make himself indispensable for the upcoming season. Plus any contribution he is able to make will be made that much sweeter since we got him from the Jets.

1. The Pats signed him in the first 12 hours of free agency, so clearly they really wanted to sign him.
2. Watson really needs to step up and do something this year. It seems like he really hasn't improved much (if at all) since his rookie year.
3. Alex Smith did nothing the other night, but I was excited about signing him. Keep your eye on him as preseason moves forward.
4. Dave Thomas is a good guy to have on the roster, but he's still best remembered in these parts for his idiotic personal foul in the playoff game against the Chargers.
