Wakefield Sets Non-Star Record for Wins

After earning his 8th win of the season in the Red Sox victory over the Yankees last night, Tim Wakefield has won his way into the MLB record books. Wake now has 186 career wins, making him the winningest pitcher in major league history to begin his career during MLB's All Star Era (1933 or later) without ever being selected as an All Star. Last night's win puts Wakefield 1 win ahead of another former Red Sox and the previous record holder, Mike Torrez. Although never selected as an All Star, the accomplishments and contributions of Tim Wakefield (186-160, 4.32 ERA lifetime) have certainly not gone unnoticed or unappreciated here in Boston. And who knows, with a few starts remaining before this year's edition of the Midsummer Classic, Wakefield (8-3, 4.50 ERA in 2009) still has an outside shot to knock himself out of the record book soon.

As you all know, I love random records, and I'd say this qualifies.

I figured out the batting records for non-Stars last year and they are all owned (for the most part) by either Tim Salmon or Tony Phillips.

...and if other sites post this I hope they give credit where it's due! Too much free time has to pay off once in a while!

Do the Sox retire #49?

I gotta say as grateful as I am for Wakefield, Wakefield's career, he still makes me very nervous up there a lot of the time. Last night not excluded.

Well pointed out by the way. Maybe now someone [else] will take notice, and make sure to get him out there at least once.
