Free Agent Friday: Robert Swift

It was rumored that Danny Ainge was a big Robert Swift fan at the 2004 NBA Draft. So will the Celtics consider signing the Oklahoma City center when he hits the open market this summer? The 7'1" Swift is still just 24 years old despite entering his 6th year. He's had trouble staying healthy, appearing in only 97 games over his first 5 years in the league. He missed the entire 2006-07 season after tearing his ACL in preseason, and missed 74 games in 2007-08 due to problems with that same knee. This past year he appeared in 26 games and averaged 3.3 points and 3.4 rebounds in 13.2 minutes. VERDICT: Assuming he is healthy, a 24 year old that is 7'1" with some skill doesn't come along every day. Similar to the Patrick O'Bryant experiment, this seems like a low risk, high reward potential signing. As a result there seems to be no harm in giving Swift a contract similar to the one handed to P.O.B. a year ago. This is the type addition that makes perfect sense for the Boston bench, adding size and defensive presence in the paint for the C's when Perk is not in the game. And certainly Swift should add more than Mikki Moore, the man he'd be replacing, did this past season.

It's believed that the C's would have drafted Swift over Big Al had Seattle not selected him....so it's conceivable that if we had drafted Swift we never would have gotten KG and never won #18, etc, etc.

Sometimes the best decisions are the ones others make for you.

that would be 2 red heads on our team. Hilarity potential if Swift and Scal were to play together

The Celts could get the former announcer from Wonderland Greyhound Park who would announce "There goes Swifty!" every time the guy scores.
The crowd would love it.
