With just 5 days to go before their 2009 season opener, sources close to negotiations have confirmed that the Red Sox have brought former prospect Hanley Ramirez back to Boston. In exchange the Sox will send starting centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and top pitching prospect Daniel Bard to the Florida Marlins. Boston originally traded Ramirez to Florida in November, 2005 in a multi-player deal in which the Sox obtained Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell. In his 3 full major league seasons the 25-year old has hit .308 with 79 HR, 207 RBI and 137 SB. Although he has been a shortstop throughout his career it is believed Ramirez will be replacing Ellsbury in centerfield for Boston. It is unknown where he will bat in the Boston lineup, but it is likely he will either hit first or second (with Pedroia moving to leadoff). He has 6-years, $70 million remaining on his current deal and the trade is clearly a cost-cutting move for the fiscally conservative Marlins. Although Ellsbury will be missed, and Bard has amazing upside, it's almost impossible not to love this deal. The Sox are currently finalizing a second prospect to send the Marlins and an official announcement and press conference are expected sometime over the next 24 hours.

The other prospect is believed to be pitcher Sid Finch.
April Fools
You !$!"/%! I just screamed when I read that and started running up the stairs to share the news with my son (who has been sleeping for a couple of hours but it`s kind of a tradition thing we do - I wake him up for big baseball news) when I remembered to look at the calendar. Good one.
Whoever wrote this is on SKAG!!!!!
This story is all a bunch of BS!
The Marlins can not and will not trade the only drawing card they have left. Instead of 2,000 people they will have 500 and they will be family and friends of the players in the stands.
OK knock it off -- tell everyone this is an APRIL FOOLS JOKE!!!!!!!!
i think the fact that the prospect is sid finch not to mention it is april fools makes it pretty obvious it is an april fools joke. i agree with ruben, good one
by the way, whats a SKAG?
April fools!
Alright DK, I admit you got me. I was mad for 5 seconds, then laughed at myself for a minute, then I emailed the link to everyone I know!!!
I already got 5 angry emails so I cant imagine how many people are angry with you!!!
:)
Simply amazing.
Ha! Great post. First of all, Hanley Ramirez would play short. Jed Lowrie? Really? This is how I obviously knew it was an April Fools prank.
Second of all, since the Marlins have obtained funding for a new stadium (groundbreaking in July) you won't see them dumping players anymore. In fact, they signed Hanley to a long-term deal last year on the presumption they would have this stadium.
The Marlins will actually be looking to hold onto players they feel will help their organization. When the stadium opens in a few years, watch for the Marlins to become a NL East power. I'm not saying they win the division every year for 13 years, but they will be good.
By the way, make fun of the Marlins' stadium attendance all you want: it rains every day. It keeps people away. However, their in-stadium advertising revenue in 2008 was somewhere near seventh in the MLB. That's because so many people in Miami watch the games from their TV. When they have a stadium with a 60-second retractable roof, they will draw a lot of fans.
Knew that one was coming...It'd be nice though to have Hanley back...Maybe Clay and another prospect would do the trick but don't see it happening...Too many health question marks with the end of our rotation to part with Clay right now although his trade value has to be at an all time high right now.
Actually Ryan Mahan, IF the sox ever got hanley, he would most likely be converted to an outfielder. I don't know about center, but he wouldn't be a shortstop much longer.
Hopefully I'll be able to post re-acquiring Hanley for real at some point....but I do appreciate everyone having a good attitude about the April Fools prank.
People are gullible
some people dropped me as a friend on facebook for posting this. ha! not only are people gullible, gullible people are idiots
