2009 NFL Mock Draft: Pats Pick Matthews

With the first NFL Draft set to begin tomorrow it is time for the 2009 RBSF NFL Mock Draft. Admittedly this year seems to be a bit more difficult than in years past, with the only lock appearing to be Georgia QB Matt Stafford going to the Lions at #1. Beyond that nearly every player has an extremely wide range as to where they may land. Last year the Pats tabbed NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Jerod Mayo with the #10 pick. This year we have New England taking USC's Clay Matthews with the #23 selection. He is still developing as a player and can already contribute heavily on special teams. Plus his father Clay is one of Bill Belichick's all-time favorite players. The choice, however, will be largely dictated by moves we currently don't know about (Julius Peppers? Jason Taylor? Trading up or down or out?) so everything is really a crap shoot at this point. Check out the comments section for our entire 1st round predictions.

I can see the headline already "Coach Belichick to mold Clay"

This from CBS Sportsline:

Aaron Curry is the epitome of athleticism and character and fits into every defensive scheme in the game, but at 6-feet-2 and 254 pounds, he'd fit best in the 3-4 defense at inside linebacker - the least valued position among the front seven. The earliest Curry is going to get drafted is fourth to the Seattle Seahawks. If the Seahawks go another route with the fourth pick, some believe Curry could slip out of the top 10.

Apparently KC is not going Curry at #3 (Jackson? Monroe?) but if he does fall would Belichick trade #23 and a 2nd rounder (+?) to move up and grab him? This could get interesting.
