2009 NFL Draft

Yesterday we presented our 2009 NFL Mock Draft, but today it's time for the real thing. The action gets underway at 4 pm today when the Lions will officially announce Georgia's Matthew Stafford is the #1 pick. Stafford has reportedly already agreed to a 6-year $41.7 million deal to become the new face of the franchise in Detroit. What happens after that however is anyone's guess. The Patriots, as usual, are in great position to make a splash with 4 picks today and 11 overall. Follow all of the rumors, picks and draft day trades right here. The first two rounds are tonight with the remainder of the draft (rounds 3-7) taking place tomorrow.

I got a guess for what happens after that....

The Lions still struggle to win 5 games.

DK said...

Early Pats rumor has New England dealing #23 and #27 to move up into the 8-10 range. Although it seems like not enough to give up to move up that high, teams are reportedly trying to drop hard to avoid getting locked into huge deals with rookies.

Last year everyone wanted to move up, we moved down and took Area 51 at #10. This year everyone wants to move down...so clearly this year we move up, right?

Gotta love Belichick.

DK said...

Not a bad guess Luke.

DK said...

Michael Crabtree is the clubhouse leader for most obnoxious outfit. He has a giant/ridiculous pinky ring. If I saw him I may drop him on my board 5 spots just for the ring alone.

DK said...

I'm VERY interested to see where James Lauranitis lands...and hope it's New England in the 2nd Round.

This guy was predicted to be a top 10 pick if he came out a year ago, he went back to school, was 1st team All American (for the 3rd time) and is now projected to be a 2nd round pick. He'd be a steal.

DK said...

If the Lions don't draft with 20 seconds I hate them

DK said...

Good job....

#1 - Detoit selects Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia

No surprise there obviously.

DK said...

How are the Rams not ready to make their pick? Just listening to trades? I hate teams that take up the entire clock for no apparent reason.

DK said...

Kiper says he would take Sanchez here. Bold.

DK said...

They did lower the clock to 10 minutes last year which does make a HUGE difference.

DK said...

#2 - St.Louis selects Jason Smith, OT, Baylor

Again, no surprise. Chiefs on the clock...Pioli's first draft with KC.

DK said...

They are focusing WAY too much on Mark Sanchez for my liking. There are a million other stories.

DK said...

I predicted Raji as a suprise pick here, but they haven't even mentioned him. Seems like Curry or Jackson, but who knows. Piole may be trading out.

DK said...

#3 - KC selects Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

DK said...

Correction, we had Raji going to the Seahawks, we had KC taking Monroe. Either way we were wrong.....and may not be right again for a while.

Seahawks on the clock (we had them taking Raji)

DK said...

#4 - Seattle selects Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest

Guess he's not coming to Foxboro. Oh well. I was hoping Sanchez went just so they'd stop talking about him. If he doesn't go until #12 (where we projected him) I don't know how much more of the draft I can watch.

DK said...

Browns on the clock...they went from being easy to root for with Romeo tot easy to root against with Mangini. Hope they draft Sanchez just because he is annoying me through no fault of his own.

DK said...

Jets have just traded into the #5 spot (presumably to pick Sanchez). Wow...the guy that is ruining my draft going to the team I hate most.

This is GREAT for me if that's the pick. Love it!

DK said...

Showing Sanchez celebrating....he's definitely going to be the pick.

DK said...

They are comparing Sanchez to Hall of Fame QBs...meanwhile his own college coach didn't think he should enter the draft!!!

DK said...

#5 - Jets select Mark Sanchez, QB, USC

DK said...

It's going to be interesting to find out what they gave up for him.....

Next up: Cincinnati (they have to take one of the tackles)

DK said...

The Jets gave up....

1st Round pick (#17)
2nd Round pick (#53)
QB Brett Ratliff (undrafted in '07)
DE Kenyon Coleman (solid)
DB Abram Elam (nickle back maybe)

Doesn't seem like a ton to give up. A #1 for next year also would have been expected. Mangini's an idiot, but so are the Jets. Hope it's a lose/lose.

DK said...

#6 - Bengels selcts Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

Not surprised that somebody who had so many off field problems would end up with Cincinnati. It will be interesting to see if he actually has a better career than Monroe or Oher.

DK said...

Raiders on the clock...Crabtree I'd imagine, but you never know with Al Davis.

DK said...

#7 - Raiders select Darius Heywar-Bey, WR, Maryland

WOW! #3 ranked WR goes 1st. I was going to have the Raiders taking him (swear) because he was the fastest WR in the draft but it just seemed to high.

As I said, never know with the Raiders.

Jaguars now on the clock.

DK said...

H-B had 2 games with zero catches this year...and he went #7? Raiders are such idiots.

DK said...

Curry being off the board and Crabtree still being out there for other teams to trade up for make it unlikely the Pats are dealing up....for now at least.

DK said...

#8 - Jaguars select Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia

Solid pick since I had him going #2 and they got him at #8. Green Bay takes Crabtree? They said they'd take the #1 player on their board.

DK said...

#9 - Packers select BJ Raji, DT, BC

I guess I'm not the only one really annoyed by Crabtree's pinky ring.

49ers on the clock....looks like Crabtree just got the call.

DK said...

#10 - 49ers select Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech

His pinky ring may be annoying but this could be an absolute steal. He is 1 of the 3 best college WRs I have seen in the last 20 years and the other 2 are Larry Fitzgerald (star) and JJ Stokes (bust). As always, could go either way.

DK said...

Buffalo Bills on the clock....

DK said...

Aaron Maybe is apparently wearing the bracelet that goes with Crabtree's ring.

DK said...

I'm convinced these guys get definitive word on who is about to be picked and then act as though they just came up with this theory. Aaron Maybe wasn't mentioned at all and then 1 minute before the Bills announce their pick he's the only one they talk about and Boomer has a feeling they may take him. Ridiculous. Oh well.

DK said...

#11 - Bills select Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State

DK said...

#12 - Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia.

WOW! Exciting pick....but shocking. Meanwhile they are just sitting here butchering McDaniels handling about the Cutler situation and not even talking about the pick.

Did they want them to take Freeman?

Redskins on the clock.

DK said...

Quickest pick = Washington

#13 - Broncos select Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas.

They took 10 seconds to make the pick so clearly they did not think he'd be around. Kiper had him ranked #6 overall. Could be a steal.

DK said...

They start talking about RBs randomly on the Saints pick....do they know something? New Orleans is on the clock at #14.

DK said...

They bring up Jenkins with 30 seconds left....who gets picked here?

DK said...

...and they select Jenkins. This coverage is starting to annoy me. Clearly they get definitive word and then try to make themselves look brilliant.

The talk RB the entire time and then start saying "But Malcolm Jenkins..." 30 seconds before the pick is made.

DK said...

#14 - Saints selects Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

I'm a big fan. Good pick.

Texans on the clock....got to assume they either go with Wells or a LB here (I had them taking Cushing)

DK said...

#16 - Texans do take Brian Cushing, OLB, USC

#17 - Chargers tak Larry English, OLB, Northern Illinois.

I had the Pats taking English up until this week when I started hearing his name so often I figured he might not be around....in the end I had him going #24.

DK said...

After 16 picks I only have 4 correct from my mock draft. Ouch. Better than anyone else though since nobody else submitted one.

I have Freeman going #17, even though I thought that would be to the Jets.

DK said...

Bucs traded #19 and a 6th rounder to move up 2 spots and take #17. They must be taking Freeman.

DK said...

#17 - Bucs select Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State.

He looks like he's 12.

DK said...

Broncos are on the clock #18 with the Browns on deck.

I'd imagine Robert Ayers (Tennessee) is the pick here.

JAS said...

Any word on who Pats are taking yet

DK said...

#18 - Broncos select Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee. Not a surprise at all there. I had him going #13...very impressive highlights, but only 1 year starter.

DK said...

I'm sticking with Matthews, but also rumors that UConn CB Darius Butler might be their guy.

In general if you hear a rumor about it from the Pats this close to their pick it's probably not true.

I also think they are going to get Lauranitis and Duke Robison in Round 2 with another pick still to use.

DK said...

Again they are wasting a ridiculous amount of time talking about McDaniels/Cutler and bashing McDaniels. Nobody thinks Cutler was a a-hole in that situation besides me?

DK said...

Correction ..... I had Freeman going to the Bucs, but at #19 (not trading up for him).

#19 Browns are on the clock with Detroit on deck. I'm getting psyched for the Pats pick! Hoping they don't deal out of the 1st altogether.

DK said...

#19 - Eagles select Jeremy Macklin, WR, Missouri.

Browns drop down another 2 spots...not sure what they got in addition to #21. They only got a 6th rounder last time, so I'm not all that impressed with their "moving down and picking up additional picks" so far. I don't think they got good value in either of their 1st 2 trades.

DK said...

#20 - Lions select Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State.

I had him going #21 to Philly, so not far off. Kiper had him #7 overall. I'm definitely not as big on him as that. I saw him at the combine and was not impressed...but his blocking is supposedly excellent. We'll see...but I'm not anywhere near the fan the guys on ESPN are. They all LOVE the pick.

Browns on the clock (again) at #21

DK said...

#21 - Browns select Alex Mack, C, California

Very interesting...solid reports on him and Kiper had him ranked #21 overall. Clearly they had him targeted from the start.

Vikings now on the clock...PATRIOTS ARE ON DECK!!!!

Minnesota to take a tackle here (Oher?) I'd assume.

DK said...

#22 - Vikings select Percy Harvin, WR, Florida

They talked about Oher for 5 minutes and then Berman says "but I have a feeling it will be a more interesting player" right as the commish is talking. What an idiot. He knew who it was...they just found out too late. Whatever.

THE PATS ARE ON THE BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!

DK said...

Guess I gotta stick with Clay at this point....but Maualuga is a possibility too. USC linebacker either way.

4 minutes remaining......and they go to commercial.

DK said...

Pats trade pick to Ravens. Unknown what they have gotten back (Ravens have #26).

DK said...

#23 - Ravens select Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

Good for him. Great story....homeless at one point. Amazing. Glad he didn't have to sit there much longer.

DK said...

They still have the Ravens listed as owning #26 too....hope that's not true.

Falcons are on the clock at #24.

DK said...

Oher is seriously an impossible guy not to root for. They were basically asking him if he was disappointed to drop and he was like "I would have been happy to go in round 7". Love it.

DK said...

Okay, Pats now listed at #26. Good news. They still haven't announced what else we got out of this.

DK said...

Pats added a 5th rounder to move down 3 spots.

DK said...

#24 - Falcons draft Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss

Dolphins on the clock. PATS ON DECK!

DK said...

#25 - Dolphins select Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois (finally another one right from the mock draft).

PATS BACK ON THE CLOCK!!!

DK said...

Talk that the Pats are trying to trade down further and were NEVER thinking of moving up. Love BB!

They will pick at #26 "if they need to" but that is not their intention.

Pats also own (today):
#34
#47
#58

DK said...

Pats do trade down again....

#26 - Packers select Clay Matthews, OLB, USC

Guess the Pats didn't want him too badly after all considering they had 2 shots to grab him if they wanted.

Maualuga still on the board. If you told me at this time last year that Maualuga and Lauranitis would still be available at #27 and neither one would be injured I wouldn't believe it.

DK said...

What did the Pats get????

DK said...

Another case where they knew the answer and pretended not to. So annoying.

#27 - Colts select Donald Brown, RB, UConn

DK said...

Bills on the clock.....

DK said...

#28 - Bills select Eric Wood, C, Louisville

DK said...

The Pats made out well in their 2nd trade....

New England traded #26 and the 5th round they just got for....

#41 (2nd round)
#72 (3rd round)
#83 (3rd round)

So basically they ended up dealing #23 for 41, 72 & 83.

They now have 13 picks in the draft and still have 4 to make today (35, 41, 47, 58)

DK said...

#29 - NYG select Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina

I saw his bowl game and he was absolutely ridiculous.

DK said...

#30 - Titans select Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers.

DK said...

5 WR taken in the first round. I like when there is a huge run on one posititonso you can check it out in a few years to compare.

DK said...

Correction....6 WR taken

Heyward-Bey (7)
Crabree (10)
Macklin (19)
Harvin (21)
Nicks (29)
Britt (30)

DK said...

#31 - Cardinals select Beanie Wells, RB, Ohio State

#32 - Steelers select Ziggy Hood, DT, Missouri

The first round has come to an end....

Lions are up and Pats are on deck.

I wasn't planning to watch the entire 2nd round but the Pats do have 4 picks....

DK said...

#33 - Lions take Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan

PATS ARE ON THE CLOCK (for the 3rd time)

I think they'll keep this one....

Maualuga still out there...

DK said...

Maualuga, Lauranitis, Butler & Barton I think are the 4 options

DK said...

#34 - PATRIOTS SELECT PATRICK CHUNG, DB, OREGON

What?????????????????????????????????

DK said...

Not trying to be negative but the last Chinese player we drafted top overall was Eugene Chung....yikes!

DK said...

This will have to fall under the "In Bill We Trust" category because on the surface I can't say I'm all that excited about it. It's only because I don't know a ton about Chung though, not because I know about him and don't like him.

DK said...

FUCK! Lauranitis goes #35 to St.Louis with the very next pick. VERY disappointing. I think it's an excellent pick for the Rams.

Brian Chung better be good!

DK said...

#36 - Browns take Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio State. I thought he could have been a 1st Rounder. 7 WR off the board.

Maualuga has got to be going nuts.

DK said...

WOW! Denver traded next year's #1 for the #37 pick from Seattle.

They draft Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest

Smith better be good, and the Broncos better not stink, or this will be a crazy deal.

DK said...

Pats just traded up 1 spot to get into the #40 slot (unknown what they gave up). Talk of Pat White here...

DK said...

Pats didn't just move up a pick...they still have #41....2 in a row for the Pats....

DK said...

Pats take Ron Brace, DT, BC

VERY interesting.

DK said...

Pats gave up #47 and added a 4th and 6th to move up 7 spots.

Luke said...

Sorry if you've written this already DK but who got Pat White?

DK said...

#41 = Pats take Darius Butler, CB, UConn.

Luke said...

Abram Elam is a safety. (one of the Jets giveaways)
all I know is he's pretty good in Madden.

*couldn't tell if you were unsure when you said he was a Nickel DB

Luke said...

Great coverage by the way....

I am still filtering through your breakdown.

DK said...

2nd round picks....

33 - DET Louis Delmas S W.Michigan
34 - NE Patrick Chung S Oregon
35 - STL James Lauranitis ILB Ohio St
36 - CLE Brian Robiskie WR Ohio St
37 - DEN Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest
38 - CIN Rey Maualuga ILB USC
39 - JAX Eben Britton OT Arizona
40 - NE Ron Brace DT BC
41 - NE Darius Butler CB UConn
42 - BUF James Byrd CB Oregon
43 - CAR Everette Brown DE Florida St
44 - MIA Pat White QB W.Virginia
45 - NYG Clint Sintim OLB Virginia

Pats next pick is #58...that's it for today barring a trade.

DK said...

Luke, Pat White to Dolphins.....

DK said...

46 - HOU Connor Barwin DE Cinncinnati
47 - OAK Michael Mitchell S Ohio
48 - Denver on the clock....

Luke said...

Thanks.

Damn. I like him.

DK said...

The guy the Raiders took at #47 overall Mel Kiper said he didn't expect to be drafted. He was listed as a "high priority free agent"...ESPN doesn't even have a photo of him. HILARIOUS!

Luke said...

My take on the Broncos trade is that they desperately do not want to do badly this season after the Cutler situation and are protecting against being second guessed. That said, if it doesn't work out Mcdaniels will be begging for a third year.

DK said...

48 - DEN Darcel McBath S Texas Tech
49 - SEA Max Under OL Oregon
50 - CLE Mohammed Massaquoi WR Georgia
51 - DAL on the clock

DK said...

Dallas traded their pick...

51 - BUF Andy Levitre Oregon State
52 - CLE David Veikune LB Hawii
53 - PHI LeSeana McCoy RB Pitt
54 - MIN Phil Loadholt OT Oklahoma
55 - ATL William Moore S Missouri
56 - IND Fili Moala DT USC
57 - BAL Paul Kruger DE Utah

PATRIOTS BACK UP ON THE CLOCK....

DK said...

With the #58 pick the New England Patriots pick....

Sebastian Vollmer, OT, Houston

DK said...

Pats have dealt their first 3rd round pick (#73) to Jacksonville for a 7th this year and 2nd next year.

Already we're in great shape for the 2010 draft. The Pats are amazing.

Still have #'s 83, 89, 97 this round

#97 cannot be traded since it's a compensatory pick for a free agent signing.

DK said...

Pats on deck....they are on #82.

They are talking TE as the top position available....I wouldn't' be surprised to see the Pats go in that direction....

DK said...

PATS ON THE CLOCK AT #83...

DK said...

I'm predicting the OLB from USC that didn't even start....

DK said...

The pick is in.....

With the #83 pick the Pats select Brandon Tate, WR, North Carolina.

DK said...

They are saying Tate was a better prospect than Nicks before tearing his ACL/MCL and otherwise would have gone 1st Round.

Also "off the field" issues....

Tested positive for marijuana at the NFL combine. WOW! Idiot. I tore apart BJ Raji for this and it turned out not to be true...so tough not to think Tate is an idiot here.

I assume the Pats did their homework.

DK said...

Pats dealt #89 to the Titans for next year's 2nd Round pick.

Pats now have 3 2nd rounders for next year. Amazing how they pull this off all the time.

DK said...

Pats time Tyrone McKenzie @ #97
OLB - South Florida

Sick career stats and 2-time All Big East.

JBS said...

Pats traded Ellis Hobbs to Eagles for 2 5th rounders. huh?
