Prospect Watch: Kevin O'Connell

In this edition of Prospect Watch we look at Pats backup QB Kevin O'Connell. Last year the Pats selected O'Connell in the 3rd Round of the NFL Draft (#94 overall). He impressed in pre-season, particularly with his mobility, but appeared in only two games during the regular season (completing 4 of 6 passes for 23 yards). The 23-year old was a 4-year starter, and captain, for San Diego State. At 6'6" and 235 pounds he certainly looks the part, but is he ready to step in and play? Although Tom Brady is expected to be ready to start in '09, last year proved a backup plan is essential. So the question is, does O'Connell has the makings of the next Matt Cassel? Or will the former Aztec follow the lead of the likes of Kliff Kingsbury, Rohan Davey and Michael Bishop? That call could be made, in large part, this coming pre-season.

The 3 biggest questions for now:

1. Will the Pats draft another QB?

2. Will they sign a veteran QB?

3. Are O'Connell & Gutierrez going to be backing up Brady in '09?

O'Connell will definitely be on the roster this year, but I do think they'll try to add a veteran for insurance.

Patrick Ramsey's name keeps resurfacing as a potential backup. Any word on where that stands?

Patriots were awarded three compensatory picks for losing Asante Samuel, Randall, Gay, and Donte Stalworth. Looks like they'll get an extra pick in 3rd round, 4th round, and 6th round to give them six of the first 100 picks.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays into things.

In terms of QBs in the draft the scouts seem to like Stafford and Sanchez, but then feel that there is a big drop off after that.

I heard the Patriots were looking at Pat White from West Virgina, but as a WR or DB.

I do not like the rumors of Patrick Ramsey at all. He absolutely STINKS.

Here's a few FA QBs id rather see than Ramsey

Kyle Boller
Rex Grossman
Gus Frerotte
Jeff Garcia

I do think O'Connell will be alright if needed. He'll have good support in the running game cause Taylor is gonna have a great year (for a Pats RB), and he's pretty mobile. But it never hurts to have a guy on the sideline that has experience.

Any chance of us picking up Tony Gonzalez?

Pat White is the f'ing man.

Who is our new offensive coordinator? That is very important to everything. Charlie Weis and Josh McDaniels proved to be great at developing QBs....we now need the next OC to do the same
