Mark Teixeira is a Liar

Red Sox fans followed Mark Teixeira's free agency closely. This makes perfect sense since a signing that big (for better or worse) was going to affect the franchise significantly. In the end Teixeira took the most money and signed with the Yankees. Fine, no problem. But now Teixeira is saying that the Sox had loose lips in regards to negotiations and "in the end it probably worked against them". This is an outright lie. Teixeira has (since) made it clear the Yanks were his #1 choice all along, knew the Yanks were interested and knew money is always non-issue for New York. In other words he knew all along he was going to wind up in pinstripes. So how did anything the Red Sox did in negotiations affect their chances? Answer: they didn't. This is simply a feeble attempt to make Boston look bad and give him a "reason" to have signed with New York other than he's greedy or his wife told him to. Sorry Mark, I'm not buying the bit about Boston "hurting their chances" because it so clearly is simply not true. Fortunately for Teixeira a liar has plenty of company in the Bronx.

Teixeira went on to say:

"in reality, the Yankees were gonna be the team, like I said all along, if all things were equal, the Yankees were the place that I wanted to go. It made the most sense for my family. It made the most sense for me and my career and where I wanted to go. Being a Yankee and wearing the pinstripes into the new Yankee Stadium, it doesn't get any better than that. They had a leg up all along."

So once again, how did the Sox hurt their chances by talking about the contract when they clearly had no shot all along? Clearly just an attempt to make the Sox look bad.

Petty, unnecessary, untrue and typical. At least he's fitting in right away.

Where does Teixeira rank (I refuse to call him Tex now) on your most hated Yankee list before he even plays a game? Looking at their current roster I think he may be #2 behind only Rodriguez....though that is obviously always subject to change.

I'd say Top 3

The only thing the Sox said regarding Tex, is that they were out of the bidding. Sounds like it was a mutual thing at the time - so if the first word the Sox said was they were out, then it sounds like they didn't say anything until after the process was done. Although it may have been what actually shut a door that was still open. As far as what the guy says after he signs about his family and all that - You have to think that he is trying to play to the local fans and what better way to do that then say - Red Sox Bad - Yankees Good

I do believe that he was right with regard to the Sox opening their mouth when they should not have and said as much at the time

I do not believe him in the interview where he says they were talking to the Yankees the whole time. The Yankees made several comments about Mark Texiera durring the off season. I believe at best Borass - note the extra s - bet the if come and got lucky, or took the final sox offer to the Yankees.

It really doesn't matter, but I do agree - John Henry Needs to keep his mouth shut, even if it was basically to say that they were out of it - he looks like a whiney little bitch otherwise.

Bottom line for me - 2 Things could have happened if John Henry Kept his mouth shut.

1. We would have Tex
or
2. We would not.

I really am good with either and not looking like a whiney bitch.

Either way I can not see where Mr Black Berry at all helped out causes in this matter.

I don't hate Tex, or Manny for that matter, for the same reason I don't hate an Autistic Kid: In order to "hate" them, they must have done or said something which they knowingly or "should have knowingly", known not to do or was f'ed up.

I think most of what we see of these guys is between the lines, and they are awesome at it, and its almost since all we see is them being awesome, then we have this impression that they are like that in all aspects of life, and it just isn't true.

I have no doubt that A-Rod, Tex, Manny, and for that Matter Papelbon SP?, are tremendous athletes, just like based on what I have seen of them talking in the media leads me to believe they are intellectual morons.

So for me to hate Tex or any of these guys, would be like hating Rainman for walking around saying "15 Min to Wapner" repeatedly.

When Tex or Arod Talk to the media its like Rainman stopping in the middle of crossing the street because the sign starts to blink DON'T WALK!!

Rainman was a genius at math, counting cards, counting toothpicks, and memorizing phone books. These players have that same ability but with baseball, but don't ask them to cross a street, how much a pair of socks cost, or do an intelligent interview and then get mad when they come through with the Rainman answers.

They are just as much as a savant - only with a bat, a ball, and a glove.

Doodle, the only thing I don't think I understand is how are the options
1)We have him
or
2)We don't

when you say no one said anything till we were out...?

The Arsenal Labradoodle said...

What that means is - if Henry hadn't said publicly - 10 min after his meeting that "We are Out" - it may have played out differently - it may not have - but by opening his mouth it may have closed the door.

I am not saying it would have turned out different, but based on where there were, the player it was, the Great Satan of an agent he has, it was a bush league move on the part of Henry.

From all that has come out of that meeting - Sox said this is our highest offer, Borass said they have a bigger offer - which at the time no one including me believes they actually had, Sox stood their ground and told them if they had a better offer, then they would have to bow out of the bidding. - all the right moves - until Henry announced it publicly.

His announcement may have actually gotten the Yankees into it.

My point is no one knows, but no one can give me a good reason why in that situation, going public like that could help at all.

Doodle, I give Henry a little more credit than you do on this one. My thinking is he knew that the Yankees were involved, read the writing on the wall, and to save face he made it known they had reached their limit and were out as opposed to having it look as though they were outbid for him by the Yankees. I think it was simply a face-saving move after signing Teixeira was obviously not going to happen.

With that said....
I got the impression that it was not the Henry comments he was referring to, rather it was the fact that the Sox offer was known to the media/public, meaning that somebody must have leaked it. Whether or not they were accurate, I will say that there were numbers "out there" for the Sox, Nats and O's, but none for the Yanks until they signed him. That is why I don't think this had anything to do with Henry's comments about pulling out.

Furthermore, who is to say that the Sox/Nats/Os were the ones that leaked those numbers? How do we know it wasn't somebody in the Teixeira/Boras camp?

The whole thing is ridiculous.

Youk is gonna have a better year than Teixeria this year. I was all for having this guy on the roster. Not getting him doesnt change my opinion that the Sox are the team to beat in the AL East. I dont dislike this guy for lying, I dislike him cause he's a Yankee.

The Arsenal Labradoodle said...

I get what Tex was referring to, and he is a moron - as referenced accordingly- to think media outlets were not going to pontificate with numbers on the outcome -

Henry blew it - he didn't save face, and he looked like a whiner. Much like he did - think it was him - with his salary cap statement shortly after. What's the differnece between pulling out a lower bid an being outbid?????

Let me see...

Ah, I am gong to go with
"What is NOTHING Alex"

Richard Dawson....."A Hundred people surveyed said......... BING... NUMBER 1 answer"

It went down like this

1. Meeting with Tex - Sox call bluff
2. Email By Henry - 10 Min Later
3. Call to Yankees 11 Mins Later saying hey, if you want him here is were you need to be.
4. Yankees taking their time to consider
5. Tex camp coming back to Sox (most likely to get a 1%-2% better deal, to cover the bluff by Borass if Yankees don't come through )
6. Yankees Coming Through.

If he was saving face and was really "Done" there wouldn't have been any conversations on No.5 above, so he wasn't really done and he saved nothing.

So here is a question for everyone.

You ask Theo Straight up - not the outcome - but in the future - immediately after they have a meeting with the next superstar they are trying to sign which doesn't go as planed.
Does he want.

A. Henry getting on his Black Berry 10 Min after the meeting release an emotionally driven statement to the press.

B. Just about anything else.

DK said...

I don't disagree that Henry didn't help and that Theo probably wants him never to speak on baseball issues, especially in negotiations. On that point we are on the same team.

However I 100% disagree that this deal with New York somehow came together after the meeting with the Sox or Henry's pulling out. I think Henry saw the writing on the wall, which basically was "tell us the absolute most you are willing to pay so we can tell the Yankees and they can match it". Never was coming to Boston a serious option in my mind.

Did Henry help? No. Did he hurt? I think in this case the answer is also no.

The whole thing comes across as a big time setup. The only loose lips that really made this decision seems to be his wife.

DK said...

I'm with you JBS. I also find all athletes easier not to like when you get not like (or at least be annoyed by) their wives in some way.
