Free Agent Friday: Pedro Martinez

Since none of our teams seem on the verge of a free agent addition, this edition of FAF takes a look at an old friend: Pedro Martinez. Still unsigned, the 37-year old Martinez (currently #20 on the RBSF Ladder) is hoping to continue pitching in 2009. Rumor is that he wishes to return to the Mets, but they are not reciprocating his interest...not altogether surprising since Pedro went 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA while making $11.8 million with the Mets in 2008. The Dodgers may have interest, where he would be reunited with old pal Manny Ramirez. Pedro made 2 appearances in the WBC, throwing 6 innings and allowing 1 hit, no runs, no walks while striking out 6. Was it enough to prove he has something left or is it time for Pedro to hang 'em up and begin his 5-year wait for enshrinement into Cooperstown?

As long as he's not on the Yankees or against the Sox I will always root for Pedro.

Couldn't someone use him as a reliever?

Here here! (to Dk's point)

Sort of feel like Pedro burned a lot of bridges in Boston. The organization was very accomodating to him, yet he always felt like the team owed him something. I never quite got that. Manny had a similar chip on his shoulder that couldn't be explained.

At least when Pedro accosted the elderly the guy was wearing a Yankees uniform.

I wondering if Jack McCormick was wearing a pin striped suit when Manny attached him? Maybe there's a common thread there (pardon the pun).

That was one of the best drops of a baseball fight/elderly person, or a bunch of other things I am sure I will ever see. It was so instinctual, with such little use of force. If I was an MMA guru, I would talk about the use of momentum, and how Pedro just guided Zimmer to the ground. Truly brilliant stuff.

As for the post-game press conference, it was nice seeing a [any] Yankee cry, but at the same time there was a guilt and a pity, as if it was a Grandfather. Gotta love the elderly!

Mike, someone absolutely could use him as a reliever but there is a question of:

1. Would Pedro do that?
2. How much is he looking for?

Duffman, I do agree he was a prima donna...perhaps it bothered me less than it did Manny because he did (or the Sox did) a better job of keeping most of it in-house. He also (based on charitable donations, etc) seems like a better person, so that earned him some leeway as well.
