With under a minute to go in a tight game last night NBA referee Bill Kennedy took it upon himself to be a difference maker. Despite Doc Rivers seeming to do absolutely nothing to warrant a technical foul, Kennedy gave him just that. It was the second tech of the game for Rivers, earning him an ejection. The first came while Doc argued on behalf of Bill Walker, who had been called for a ridiculous technical of his own in the 3rd quarter. So basically, all 3 could have been easily avoided. The 3 unnecessary techs, coupled with a 14-shot disparity in free throw attempts, were too much for the undermanned and undersized Celtics to overcome. Last year "Arrogant Umpires" were the focus of a Weekend Grudge; perhaps overzealous refs should be the focus of an upcoming edition of the WG. Unfortunately, Rivers will be the one fined by the NBA while Kennedy moves on unaffected, forcing his will on games that are supposed to be decided by the ones playing them. Sad really.

I do want to clarify that the Celtics certainly cost themselves in this one in a number of ways. At times they had Paul Pierce as their tallest player on the court. So needless to say the refs were not the ONLY factor in the final outcome.
But the fact that they were that much of a factor at all is absolutely ridiculous. I was truly shocked.
Furthermore, Doc has built up a reputation as somebody who does not complain for the sake of complaining. For him to call out Kennedy's name (and say it multiple times so everyone got it right) was a rare move and shows just how ridiculous Kennedy is.
I bet Heinsohn was proud of Doc at least.
Also...
I truly thought after the scandal with Tim Donaghey the refereeing would get better, or at least they would err on the side of being LESS involved. That has not been the case at all and it's absolutely shocking.
I am not sure what the Celtics could have done here because they had basically one big man (Perkins) left that is taller than Pierce with Mikki Moore fouling out and Powe injured early. When Perkins took a rest, Pierce was naturally the tallest player.
Bill Kennedy went over the line a little bit last night. If you watched what transpired carefully, Doc wanted to walk away but Bill Kennedy kept staring at Doc daring him to say something. Finally, Doc say "what" and he got tossed (for just saying "what"?). And don't get me started on the "T" that Walker got from Bill Kennedy which I think started the feud. A "T" for staring at a defender?
Good point Anon. Agreed on all counts. I ESPECIALLY hate when refs (or umps) do that stare move like "I dare you to say something". Reminds me of meathead bouncers who cross the line from being in charge to abusing their tiny bit of power in the universe.
Last night was ridiculous, and yes DK, there was a lot of things the C's could have done better to win this game, but when the ref's are daring you into getting a "T" in a 3 point game w/ under a minute to go, its terrible....I know Doc will get fined but I hope that the NBA does an internal investigation on this case. Doc Rivers has a better reputation than any NBA official.

i must admit i didnt see the game. im not sure if im glad i didnt see it because it would have been so frustrating or mad because it would have been fun to hear tommy going nuts

Not never, just not here. If I was wrong about this I highly doubt the NBA would have fined Kennedy for the incident.
