Red Sox Send 14 Players to WBC

The rosters for the 2009 World Baseball Classic were announced last night, and the Red Sox will send 14 representatives to play in the 16-team tournament. The 14 include 6 from the 40-man roster and 8 minor leaguers. The major leaguers: Jason Bay (Canada), Javier Lopez (Puerto Rico), Daisuke Matsuzaka (Japan), David Ortiz (Dominican Republic), Dustin Pedroia (USA) and Kevin Youkilis (USA). Among the minor leaguers is former 2008 Futures Game MVP Che-Hsuan Lin (Chinese Tapei). The tournament begins March 5 and the Championship will be played March 23 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. In the inagural WBC (2006) Japan took home the title with Dice-K earning MVP. USA! USA! USA!

I don't understand how they choose what country a guy is eligible to play for. It seems odd to me that guys don't just play for the country they were either born in or a citizen of. America is the only country in the world where people say "I'm X (Irish, Italian, etc)" because their grandparent was born in that country. Trust me, when I went to Ireland it was obvious I was American, not Irish...and all sides of my family are from there originally.

If Jeter is batting against Dice-K or Lopez do we root for Jeter?

At least there is no Alex or Mark (I'm retiring A-Rod & Tex) on Team USA...that makes things a bit easier.

how does team usa expect to win with only 2 aces (peavy, oswalt) on the staff? i am afraid this could be exactly like the last time around for the americans. until it means more to usa they wont win
