NBA Trade Deadline

The NBA trading deadline will be here shortly (Thursday, 3pm EST) and there are rumors floating out there about nearly every player on every team in the NBA. This past week there was already one major trade as Miami and Toronto swapped former All Star forwards, with Shawn Marion and Jermaine O'Neal changing teams. Who else will be facing a change of address when the deadline strikes? Among the names being floated are Amare Stoudamire, Antawn Jamison, Caron Butler, Vince Carter, Richard Jefferson and Gerald Wallace. Old friend Raef Lafrentz and his expiring $12+ million contract could end up being a big factor on the NBA's trade day as well. Chime in with your predictions and analysis of the deals that do go down right here!

Funny that neither O'Neal or Marion wanted to come to Boston on Draft day '07. Since then they've each now been traded twice and the Celtics have won in NBA Championship. Idiots.

ICYMI: The Tyson Chandler to OKC deal was called back today. That makes Joe Smith available once again.

Brad Miller and John Salmons traded from Sacramento to Chicago today. I feel like this gives Chicago a lot of pretty decent but not great players. I feel like there could be a Chicago/Boston deal tomorrow (Salmons, Ben Gordon, Larry Hughes).

Also, just a reminder...guys that get bought out can still be picked up after tomorrow.

Joe Smith available - what a good sign

McDonald's all american game rosters out today. UNC has four players in it...3 of which are 6-10...2 of whom are twins.

So awkward for Tyson Chandler to come back to the Hornets. Rumors are intense that he and Byron Scott HATE each other.

I heard the exact opposite about Scott. I thought they were actually really tight and Scott was pissed about his being dealt. This from the Associated Press:

Scott had lamented the trade as the toughest he'd had to deal with as a coach, because he had believed in Chandler's ability to continue developing his offensive game and he had a personal friendship with Chandler. The two planned to travel to the Bahamas in the offseason with a group.

"He's a coach's dream. He'll do whatever you ask him to do, and he'll do it to the best of his ability. He has no excuses about him," Scott said.

"He's just going to go out there and try to do everything possible to win. I told him I was sick. I was sick about it. I said, 'From a personal standpoint, I'm sick to see you go. But from a professional standpoint, this is our business and this is what happens in the business.'"

Scott said he was "just kind of quiet for a little while" after general manager Jeff Bower informed him that the trade had been completed.

"I know we as coaches aren't supposed to get emotionally involved, but we are human beings," Scott said.

Now, Scott and the rest of the Hornets might not have to worry about saying goodbye but instead get a chance to see what Chandler can do if he gets healthy again.

"I still think the sky's the limit for Tyson," Scott said.

From The Sporting News:

The Blazers and Cavs have been talking with the Bucks about Richard Jefferson, and the New York Post reported that Jefferson likely is headed to Portland with Luke Ridnour for Raef LaFrentz and Travis Outlaw. ESPN.com, however, reported that the Blazers-Bucks talks have stalled, as have the Bucks' talks with the Spurs.

Chris Mihm traded from Lakers to Memphis for a future draft pick.

Shaq to Cavs rumor:

Shaquille O'Neal and LeBron James?

ESPN.com contributor Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting that the Cavs have offered Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to the Phoenix Suns for O'Neal.

And sources close to the process have confirmed to ESPN.com that the teams are indeed in talks involving O'Neal, which would offer the Suns some of the payroll relief they've been seeking. Because only $1.5 million of Pavlovic's contract is guaranteed next season, Phoenix would slice $5.5 million off of its 2009-10 payroll if it agreed to send Shaq to the Cavs.

It's believed, though, that the Suns are resistant to taking back Wallace and thus trying to convince Cleveland to part with Wally Szczerbiak's $13.8 million expiring contract instead, which would turn this into a huge financial windfall for Phoenix.

CHAD FORD (ESPN): We keep hearing all morning that the Celtics were talking to the Kings about a deal for Nocioni. The Kings can move him again as long as they don't package him with other players on their roster. The Celtics would send back Scalabrine, Tony Allen, Glen Davis and Patrick O'Bryant. However, a Celtics source says there's nothing happening there. A Kings source, however, says it would be a possibility. I wonder why the Celtics WOULDN'T do that. Nocioni would be a great piece for them.

Kings waived Cassell

Also: Shelden Williams and point guard Bobby Brown traded from Kings to the Timberwolves for guard Rashad McCants and center Calvin Booth, according to an NBA source.

Damn is it just me or is this an unusual amount of action. I feel like things have picked up the last couple of years.

Bulls and Knicks have agreed to a trade. Larry Hughes for Tim Thomas and Jerome James

JBS said...

Malik Rose for Chris Wilcox straight up? Is that true? So weird - Wilcox seems way better

JBS said...

Chicago Tribune: Tribune: That would be somewhat hilarious given that the Bulls once sent Tim Thomas home for poor practice habits, exactly one of the reasons the Bulls have distanced themselves from Hughes.

JBS said...

ESPN: Sources say the Kings have offered Kenny Thomas for Nate Robinson and Jared Jeffries. If the Knicks could move Jeffries, it would clear another $6.8 million in the summer of 2010. The Knicks would have to give up the talented Robinson and eat Thomas' $8.7 million salary next year ... but it's probably worth it to the Knicks. Especially now that they've shored up their offense with the Larry Hughes and Chris Wilcox deals.

BOSTON.COM:

The Celtics have traded backup center Patrick O'Bryant to the Sacramento Kings. The move was made for salary-cap purposes and the club will not receive a player in return, according to an NBA source.

There is the possibility that the club will receive a draft pick in exchange for the 7-footer, who averaged 1.5 points in 26 games for the Celtics after signing as a free agent in the offseason.

O'Bryant was not at the Celtics' shootaround this afternoon.

BOSTON.COM:

The Celtics are considering trading backup center Patrick O'Bryant to the Sacramento Kings, but there is also a possibility that he will instead be sent to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for guard Will Solomon.

We previously reported the deal to the Kings -- which would be made to clear salary-cap space and would not have brought a player in return, according to an NBA source -- was complete. It is not as of this hour, with the Raptors deal still viable option for Celtics president Danny Ainge as the 3 p.m. trade deadline approaches.

Solomon is averaging 4.8 points, 1.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists in 13.6 minutes per game for Toronto. A Solomon-O'Bryant trade would work salary cap-wise. Because Boston and Toronto are over the cap, the 25-percent trade rule would be invoked. Boston and Toronto had to be no more than 125 percent plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which would be the case here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The 7-foot O'Bryant, who was not at the Celtics' shootaround this afternoon, has averaged 1.5 points in 26 games for the Celtics after signing as a free agent in the offseason.

An NBA source said the Celtics are interested in veteran center Calvin Booth, who just was acquired by the Kings from Minnesota. Boston could be interested in adding Booth as a free agent if he is waived.

Marc Stein: Looks like we have a fairly significant three-way deal that has been submitted to the league just before the trade deadline.

NBA front-office sources tell ESPN.com that Orlando is acquiring Rafer Alston from Houston to fill the void created at point guard by Jameer Nelson's shoulder injury.

The Rockets will receive Memphis guard Kyle Lowry, Orlando forward Brian Cook and perhaps two other minimum-salaried players to make the finances work.

The Grizzlies will receive a first-round pick from Orlando.
