The Celtics made two important announcements today. First the news that Tony Allen needs surgery on his left thumb and will be lost for (at least) the rest of the regular season. Danny Ainge also said goodbye to another guard, shipping Sam Cassell (and cash) to Sacramento for a "heavily protected" 2nd Round pick in 2015. In other words, the C's will never see the pick and they just paid the Kings to take Cassell off their hands. Why? Thursday is the NBA's trade deadline and, especially now with TA out, the Celts needed to free up a roster spot in case they can add somebody. How will the loss of TA affect the C's? Who might they add? Who gets Allen's minutes if nobody is added? Bill Walker? Although these are two significant news items from the C's today they are likely not the last news items involving the Celtics this week.

Almost a guarantee that the Kings simply waive Sam. If that happens he will likely return as insurance if the Celtics cannot add anyone else, or perhaps as an additional assistant coach if they can.
I've got to believe for Ainge to deal away insurance like Cassell, especially after TA goes down, they MUST have something else lined up.
The following players are at the end of their contracts and could hypothetically be in the Celts salary range depending on trades:
Big men:
Rasho Nesterovic
Drew Gooden
Rasheed Wallace
Jason Collins
Stromile Swift
Small men:
Bobby Jackson
Stephon Marbury
Ray Felton
Ben Gordon
Marquis Daniels
Desmond Mason
Grant Hill
Keith Bogans
Juan Dixon
Giddens, Walker, Big Baby, Pruitt - some combo of these 4 would have to go.
From Yahoo:
The Boston Celtics reached out to the Charlotte Bobcats about trading for proven playoff performer Raja Bell, a league source said. So far, the Celtics don’t have anything in return that appeals to Charlotte.
The Bobcats are telling people that they have a possible two-for-one trade percolating and need to keep a hold on a roster spot.
Boston lost guard Tony Allen to thumb surgery on Tuesday, and he could be out until the playoffs. For months, the Celtics have unsuccessfully tried to trade 2008 first-round pick J.R. Giddens for a draft choice.
I don't really want Raja Bell much, but there are other guys on the Bobcats that I would surely take (and probably wouldn't require as much as Bell).
Tony Allen out 8 weeks...which is basically out until taxes are due....which is the day of the last game of the regular season.
I would love Raja Bell - tough defender, hits the 3, has experience.
We can't trade Powe or Baby if we don't get a big man so I am not sure how it would be possible
Raja Bell seems like the wrong fit at the time. He's too good to be a bench player, and not Pierce or Allen. So I'm not entirely sure how it would work either.
I also would be curious to hear our end of what we're looking to lose.
Maybe Bell's than I thought he was but I certainly don't consider him a guy that's too good to be coming off the bench...especially on a team like the Celtics.
I bet the C's are offering Walker or Giddens, Baby or Leon and a 1st Round pick.
That's the point. He would start other places, but he can't here. He legitimized himself in Phoenix and is not the scrub he was on the '6ers.
We SHOULD NOT give up Powe.
(that is exactly what I was afraid of)
I'm with you on that Luke, I don't like the idea of giving up Leon.
I guess I see what you mean...he's not necessarily too good to sit on the bench but you are giving up too much for a guy who will come off the bench.
