In the first edition of MWM of 2009 there is certainly plenty to discuss....What are your favorite sports moments from 2008? What are you looking forward to in 209? Are you concerned about the prospect of Scott Pioli leaving the Pats? What should New England do about free agents to be Matt Cassel and James Sanders? Think Brady will be back in '09? Worried about the Celtics 1-3 road trip out west? What do they need to add? Hockey at Wrigley Field today....will Fenway be next? Any thoughts on the Sox next move? My Top 5 sports moments of 2008:
5 - Jon Lester's no-hitter
4 - Summer Olympics
3 - Bruins return to relevance
2 - C's win #17!
1 - The birth of realbostonsportsfans.com!
I wanna say thanks to those that voted me into the Hall Of Fame. I want to make sure people know that i'm not gonna disappear now that i'm in. There may be a few days sometime within the next week or so that i wont be able to post. I'll be driving from Austin to Boston.
I am worried about the Pats and the Red Sox. The Pats have lost a lot of coachig and front office talent in the last 3 years and will lose some more this year (Crennell, Weiss, Mangini, McDaniels, Dmitroff, Pioli is next). Additionally - the defense too often looks old and slow against good teams). That doesnt even begin to address the Brady question and what do to with Cassell.
As for the Sox - they are in the toughest division in sports with the Yanks, Rays and the Jays (O's will be decent). Right now the Sox have MAJOR question marks at C, SS, 3B, DH, CF and RF).
They have a strong farm system and a mountain of cash - but too many question marks heading into the season.
Varitek is shot - good platoon and clubhouse guy now but wont accept that role. Lowrie is a dime a dozen and Lugo stinks. No idea on Lowell's health or Papi's health, aging, big belly and JD Drew will give you 125 games in a great season of health. Is Ellsbury the guy we saw in the 2007 playoffs or the guy we saw in 2008?
It could all work out beautifully -but I am a little nervous right now.
Sounds like your about ready to be a realbaltimoresportsfan.
Though I agree with your sentiment Polarbear, and think it is a good point, I think most of the details of your analysis are exaggerated and not as bad as you make it out.
I too am worried a lil bit but hopeful, and glad that the Boston era of ten years ago is gone forever (and won't be approached again).
*sidenote: Though he undoubtedly will get another head coaching job, I until then will hold the hope (similar to some of GMAC's trade ideas) that Crennel could come back and join our team yet again as our D Coordinator, simply for the love of the game and not mind a pay cut. (Weiss too for that matter)
[obviously I know the likelihood of this happening is about as good as DK starting a letter campaign to trade Youk, to the Yankees]
I just heard word that there was/has been talk of getting [super-old] Dikembe Mutombo...
I actually would like this. At first glance it is a "why" scenario, but after seeing the effect P.J. had last year I think it could actually be helpful (if there is any truth to it).
He could fit in for our Defense for small minutes (esp. when the second unit is out there), and could be a good learning aid to our bigmen all of which are young (KG not included of course) which I am always a fan of.
Anyway, please tell me if I am misinformed or if there has been other stirring.
Nevermind Marbury... (unless that KG beef is completely squashed)
I hear this movie is awesome: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1204298/
Peyton Manning overwhelmingly named NFL MVP. Did I miss how great of a year he had or was it just a year with no A+ candidates? Seems like none of the guys who received votes would have really impressed me. Weird. Seems like the NFL should be able to produce SOMEBODY that makes you look at them and think "MVP". Maybe not.
Peyton's gone. It just never gets old seeing his look of frustration, disdain for his teammates after a failed drive, trumped only by that of Dan Marino.
Oh joy! Adiós Peyton.
And you're right DK, he had no business taking home MVP. Fitting it is he & Favre who are the ones with 3. Media darlings...
Overrated players.
i love manning getting eliminated and now im rooting against the dolphins
the playoffs for me are all about who to root against if the boston team is out

Anyone aware that the Lakers played only their SECOND game since Christmas last night? Celtics have played 5 games since then. I don't understand the NBA scheduling.
i do understand the distinction but i still think its weird to give peyton the mvp and then drew brees the best offensive player. doesnt peyton play offense too? brees didnt get a single mvp vote. like i say i do understand the difference its just weird
polar bear have some confidence would you? its a new year!
