Area 51: NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year

Patriots inside linebacker Jerod "Area 51" Mayo was named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year yesterday. Mayo was the #10 overall pick in last year's NFL Draft. His 128 tackles (100 solo) was tops on the Pats and easily best among rookies. He finished 10th overall in the NFL in tackles and 5th in solo tackles. He is the 2nd Patriot to win the award, joining Hall of Fame cornerback Mike Haynes (1976). Mayo was a new-unanimous choice earning 49-of-50 votes. Well done Area 51!

The "other" vote went to Keith Rivers of the Bengels. Rivers fractured his jaw in Game 7 and didn't play the rest of the year. He missed over half the season and somebody actually voted for him!?!

He was one of the most valuable players for the Pats all year long. I didnt pick him pre-season to win the award only becuase i fugured the guys we had would have all had better years than they did and he wouldnt have need to make such an impact. But he was the obvious choice. Congrats Area 51!!! You got rookie of the year this year, can Mayo be the next Dustin Pedroia and take Defensive player of the year next year?

I am glad. A deserved win.
Slightly surprised Rogers-Cromartie didn't get one vote - though I know the ARZ defense gives up about 40 points a game, he did have a couple of big plays during the last few weeks of the season, thought he may've gotten one.

I would brag about predicting this in my pre-season preview but that would run the risk of people going back to look at it and realizing I had also predicted a Pats/Cowboys Super Bowl.

Glad we avoided uncovering that.
