The Nickname Game has produced its first nickname as the NHL’s hits leader and Bruins tough guy Milan Lucic will now be known as “The Luc Ness Monster”. Congrats to Walpole Joe for the winning submission. Vote now to help find a nickname for Pats rookie linebacker Jerod Mayo….though there were a disappointing low number of suggestions, hopefully we’ll still find a winner. This week’s feature is Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski. This selection is inspired by the very first nickname contest I ever ran, on “DK’s Dugout”, for former Red Sox first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. As was the case then, my main motivation is to avoid having to type out Gostkowski every time I want to reference him. Gostkowski is a product of the University of Memphis, where he was also a member of the baseball team. He has been very effective for the Pats, both with his penchant for touchbacks and his accurate field goal kicking. Like the first two featured athletes in the Nickname Game, he also looks as though he’ll be around a while. So hopefully all of the RBSFs out there can get creative this week and help put together some solid options for a new nickname for the Pats kicker!
