The Pats have reached the halfway point of the 2008 season, so it seems like a good time to size up the team’s progress in this edition of the Patriots Weekly Post. New England is 5-3 and in a 3-way tie for first in the AFC East with the Dolphins just a game behind. Who is considered the favorite to win the division at this point? Matt Cassel has been playing solid football, especially the past 3 weeks. Kevin Faulk is likely to be named Pats Player of the Week vs the Colts, which would be his third time being so honored this year. Is that a good thing for a guy who is clearly best suited to be a valuable role player? Is The Firm ready to be a #1 back? The offensive line did look better this past week in both the running game and protecting Cassel. How much of the credit goes to a line that’s finally healthy and how much goes to Cassel finally getting a better feel for life in the pocket? Wes Welker is on pace for 112 receptions and 1,006 yards but has scored just once all year. Why? Randy Moss is on pace for 76 catches, 1,072 yards and 8 TD. What grade would you give Moss in ’08? Ellis Hobbs stepped up against the Colts, which other cornerback is going to start beside him down the stretch? Gary Guyton is getting lots of playing time at ILB lately, has he officially supplanted Tedy Bruschi in the middle of the Pats defense? Who are the Pats offensive and defensive MVPs at the mid-way point? And is it just me or has Belichick not been great in '08? Pats next 3 games:
vs Bills
vs Jets
@ Dolphins
We will know who will win the AFC East when these 3 games are done.
I mentioned a ton of issues, but as far as the team MVP Awards:
Offense - Faulk
Defense - Seymour
I think for Defensive MVP a case can be made for Meriweather (based on the numbers), he's 4th on the team in tackles (32) and first in interceptions (3) and there are only 6 guys in the NFL with more ints than Meriweather (but 12 tied with him).
Cassel is my offensive MVP.
8th in completion %, on pace for over 3000 yards passing, and there are only 5 teams with more wins than the Patriots.
The probelm is either poor play calling or poor execution of the plays.
If we need help in the secondary Deangelo Hall is available. Sure he had some attitude issues and wasnt producing for the Raiders. But we got another guy like that who seems to working out just fine. Winning works wonders on players.
Hall is skilled CB. And i think it would be real nice to see him in a Pats uniform.
He's in his 5th season, he's made 2 pro bowls, 20 int, 2 int for TD, 61 passes defensed, 3 forced fumbles and 245 tackles.
He was cut by the Raiders. Because they were disappointed in his performance, he has 3 int and 43 tackles this year. Those numbers are good enought for second on the Pats in tackles and tied for the team lead in int.
GMAC, you beat me to the bunch. Just heard this and was coming on to post it. We'd be foolish not to at least kick the tires on the idea of signing Hall.
I will say, however, high tackle totals are not necessarily a good thing for a CB.
More DeAngelo Hall facts....
In his eight games in Oakland, Hall was beaten 40 times for 552 yards on 66 passes thrown his way, according to data compiled by STATS LLC. He gave up more yards than any defender this season and was tied for third worst in catches allowed.
Also, I'm surprised nobody gave Mayo any Defensive MVP love.
Since Raiders will pay remainder of salary this season Hall may actually be a possibility, correct? Does anyone know exactly how much Cap Room we do have?
NFL Salary cap is $116,729,000
Pats salary this year is $113,372,722
This makes the cap room for this year $3,356,278 (if both prior numbers are correct).
I know Hall wasnt great for the Raiders but remember Moss had 1558 yards and 11 TDs in 2 years there, 1st year in NE he had 1493 yards and 23 TDs. Being with a winning franchise works wonders on under achievers.
Ty Law to the Jets?
Law is going to the Jets to try and prove a point to the Pats that they should've signed him.
