Mid-Week Miscellaneous

Since it is Thanksgiving it seems logical to have a holiday-themed version of Mid-Week Miscellaneous this week. Today is Thanksgiving, which is known for lots of turkey eating as well as lots of football watching. So does watching football on the couch with a belly of turkey help to make Thanksgiving the #1 sports holiday? Or perhaps it is New Year’s Day, with the slate of college football bowl games. Maybe, in Boston at least, Patriot’s Day is the ideal choice, with both the Boston Marathon and an afternoon Red Sox game to enjoy. Or just maybe the 4th of July is your thing, with a game of horseshoes in the backyard? Also on the table for discussion this week is fighting in the NFL…specifically the Matt Light incident in Miami last weekend. What is your take? Should Light have been suspended? Were you pleased to see the Titans finally drop a game last weekend (even if it meant a Jets win)? Also, I’m thinking of having some RBSF contests: bowl game predictions, March Madness, etc. Would people be interested? What would be the best site to use? These and anything else you want to add are all up for discussion here in Mid-Week Miscellaneous….

I think Light should have been suspended by the league....and Crowder should have as well. I must say that I'm very pleased that he hit that punk but it clearly was a very stupid thing to do in terms of the big picture.

As for the best sports holiday, I'll take New Year's Day...non-stop football while being hungover.

I could not believe that Light was not suspended

*I love the NFL replay feature on NFL network - like the Sox in 2 feature on NESN - limiting the game to 2 hours.

*Detroit Lions are a disgrace to football. Their effort was atrocious

*Hockey is not a fun sport to follow in the papers - is there a site that has all Bruins highlights?

*The Golden State Warriors will be really fun to watch when Monta Ellis comes back...although they will be tiny: Ellis, Maggette, Stephen Jackson, Jamal Crawford, and Biedrins. Try and out shoot that team...I dare anyone.

I voted for Thanksgiving Day as the best sports Holiday. But i would have to call it a tie between Turkey day and 1/1.

I'm glad there was no suspension of Light or Crowder. The No Fun League needs to take it easy. Let them play a mean, aggressive game of football. With that said i was very surprised there was no suspension.

I wonder if Belichick knows the Pats are 4-1 in games that Green-Ellis has scored a TD. And he has been active for 8 games now. They are now 4-4 with him on the active roster. Only 1 loss when he scores a TD. And 3 when he doesnt. But they have 4 wins when he does. I'm no math genius but it would seem like a good idea to let him play a lil more.

This could very well be the end of Plaxico in New York. Yet it is quite unlikely it would affect the team. With Umenyiora out, Plaxico having been missing, & even Jacobs out last week, nothing has been more than a small speed bump on their inevitable path to victory. (This is of course with the exception of the un-Brown like performance now several Monday nights ago).
If you had asked before the playoffs last year if the Giants had a shot of winning back-to-back Super Bowls even the most ardent Giants fan would have been shaken back to reality, and I believe even after their SB win, few would've thought.
Now that Eli has a consistent confidence, along with any other major powerhouse being eliminated due to injury, age, or consistency- it seems only they can beat themselves. To this point they had only needed Eli to be pretty good, and with him actually being a legit Q this year it gives them some slack.
Apart from the ever-likely Playoff knockoff (one of the main reasons the NFL is my favorite professional sport) it would seem that it is but a foregone conclusion that they will be Super Bowl champs at the front end of 09 and heading into the summer.

After examining them closely I would say the best chance at their downfall would be their defensive puzzle halting effectiveness. They are one of their greatest strengths still, but not as strong as the team that bombarded us last year in February. The names aren't the same on the backs of their jerseys and they seemed to have maintained such status with an overall "chemistry" that is not ripe, but palpable to run out at some unforseen time.
Til then we will have to deal with a strong and [usually 3] deep running game, and a quarterback with newly found confidence.
As much as I'd like to say that the only reason they are where they are is because of the hobbling league, they are in actuality the one team I will not. I do not want them to see the same laurels as the other back-to-back winners of the last couple of decades, and eagerly await the [early] playoffs when their ship is most tipsy and succeptible to being toppled. If not, here's to them falling off into sports oblivion like the Broncos of the late 90's.
I do still prefer them to the Jets.

As for the Holiday I would choose other if it was available. I would say the First cause there's an endless amount of games, and you're near always on vacation (at least from work). But as of late, meaning the last 10 or so years I haven't really been into most of the Bowl games with the exception of the Championship game. Who knows how long that will last in this format or the format altogether?
Like the idea of it and love competition on any level especially when it manifests itself in physical prowess, but the Super Bowl really does seem like a holiday these days, can even go down to the store and grab a sixer. Any holidays during March Madness? St. Patrick is close but a little late I believe.

Antonio Pierce could get caught up in this Giants' mess if he acted as an accessory.
