Mid-Week Miscellaneous

In this week’s edition of Mid-Week Miscellaneous, as always, we take a look around the entire sports spectrum outside of our beloved Boston Big 4 teams. The Revs tonight take on Chicago in a “loser goes home” 1st Round playoff match. As disappointing as 3 straight losses in the MLS Cup Final have been, a first round exit would be even worse. The boxing world prepares for another aging star to make a stand this weekend as Roy Jones Jr. takes on Joe Calzaghe. Will Jones be able to do what Bernard Hopkins just accomplished and have a dominating performance in his later years? Speaking of Jones, is he the best boxer of the past 20 years? If not, who is? Gold Gloves were handed out these past two days in baseball…does anyone take them seriously? They seem to be handed out largely on reputation these days (always?). Has anyone been paying attention to golf with Tiger gone (Ryder Cup aside)? These and any other topics you wish to discuss can be thrown about right here!

If you didn't check the RBSF Schedule, the Revs/Fire game is tonight at 8:45.

I think Jones was a great boxer, but Mayweather won titles in 5 different weight classes. Jones was Ring magazine figher of the year once (1994) and Mayweather got that honor twice (1998 and 2007). So i dont like saying it but i'm gonna have to call Mayweather the best.

Jones isnt fighting a yoing guy with a long career left like B-Hop was, Calzaghe is 36 yrs old and beat B-Hop to get the title Jones is trying to get.

Brady Quinn gets his first start tonight.

Deangelo has reportedly been contacted by 15 NFL teams already.

They are saying the Peavy sweepstakes is likely down to the Cubs, Braves and Dodgers.

Just glad the Yanks are out of it (apparently at least). Leaving him in the N.L. is fine with me, although clearly I hate him now.

Chicago beat the Revs 3-0. Total blowout. I watched a bit and it was only 1-0 and it looked like NE had given up. Too bad...streak of 3 straight Eastern Conference titles comes to an end.

GMAC, I have a tough time disagreeing with Mayweather as much as I also hate to admit it. He fought it multiple weight classes, never lost, and never dodged anyone as far as I can tell. Not the best to watch, but I believe he's the best.

Aside from Mayweather, 2 other boxers have won Ring Magazine's "Fighter of the Year" multiple times in the past 20 years:
* James Toney (1991, 2003)
* Evander Holyfield (1996, 1997)

Coincidence that both of these guys have been linked to steroids?

How about D'Angelo Hall to the Pats? they need help in the secondary, and Bill always tends to help malcontents.

I'd bet we're one of the 15 that have contacted him.

I agree with you DK.

The only person I think Mayweather was dodging (off the top of my head) is Cotto, a couple of summers before he lost, it looked like no one wanted any part of him, Floyd Mayweather included.

For the new poll question which format is like more. Only because i cant contribute in all in game post sessions would i have to say i like the original format. But i really do like the during game stuff when i can see the game.

And i agree Mayweather kinda ducked Cotto but if Cotto beat Margarito he would have fought him.

How come you dind't vote for Original if that was your view in the poll? I too prefer original, though I think the ideal scenario would be a combination of the two. I really like the game posts and they're great when your there (for Patriots games I think it makes a lot of sense) but just feel it takes up too large a proportion of the site, or the Front Page.
If you miss that two or three hour time period in which to comment, the post becomes Great for review, but unappeasing for comments. (Esp. when comments are in the upwards of hundreds, if not at least tens).
All that said I really like the game posts, when you're able to watch & chime in it is very nice (works tremendously well with baseball cause of the in-between moments). When you are out of THE City or have no one to watch with, it provides that comradery to watch the games with.
I guess I just think it should be selective which games. It of course would be nice to have all games but not at the cost of taking up more than 25% of the site's content. That would truly be a full time job and though I know you say you have one it would be hard to imagine a more diligently run site at least by one man.
Lastly, I think basketball is a tough enough sport to listen to a radio broadcast (much less be contributing to, I imagine) that taking the time to write the comments during play, often makes you miss some of the action.

(I acknowledge most of the world are better typers than I)

What I do like about Celtics (in-game) posts is the information given on the youngsters, and guys that may be less reliable. I appreciate those updates.
I guess I am just not convinced that those updates wouldn't be there anyway in the tradional [out of game] posts.
