The Bruins (8-3-3) hit the road tonight to battle the Blackhawks (7-3-3) in Chicago. Although the ‘Hawks are just two seasons removed from being bad enough to “earn” the #1 overall pick in the NHL Draft, currently they are behind only Detroit in the Central Division and are tied with the Red Wings for the best record in the NHL over their past 10 games (7-1-2). Apparently the firing of coach Denis Savard, although it seemed somewhat premature at the time, was a stroke of genius. Of course it doesn’t hurt to have some of the best young stars in the NHL on the team in Patrick Kane (7-11-18, last year’s Rookie of the Year), Patrick Sharp (9-7-16) and Jonathan Toews (1-8-9; youngest Captain in the NHL). They also added Brian Campbell (2-7-9) in the offseason, the top defenseman on the market. Suddenly a game that garnered little to no interest on the schedule before the season began is one of the league’s biggest games of the week. The Bruins will need more stellar play in net and will need to play physical with the Chicago youngsters. This would be a nice win for Boston before their big game at home vs. the Habs tomorrow night. Let’s go Bruins!Wednesday, November 12, 2008
B's Report: Game 15 vs Blackhawks

Really excited to see Patrick Kane in live game action. This kid looks like the real deal...and as Walpole Joe pointed out in the past, he also looks about 12.
B's game is being delayed big time due to the Blackhawks retiring #3 in honor of both Pierre Pilote and Keith Magnuson....yawn!
Tim Thomas & Nikoli Khabibulin in net
It took 40 seconds to realize how good Brian Campbell is. What a smooth skater.
Early tensions with Chara and Ladd from Chicago.
Packed arena. Good to see a city that supports hockey...at least when they are playing well.
B's first good scoring chance...nice 4-on-2 break. Nice playing by Hunwick for the B's.
B's need to stay out of the box. Less than 10 minutes in and they just put Chicago on their 2nd PP.
I was watching the Celtics...not sure what happened but Thornton just got an instigator, fighting and 10-minute misconduct penalties all at once.
B's have fought off 3 PP in a row.
Impressive.
Getting out shot 11-4 so far!
Toews with a sick pass trying to set up a SH bid. Sharpe whiffed.
Good rush by Kessel. Great individual effort but save by Khabibulin.
ANOTHER penalty by Boston with 2 mins left in the 1st Period. How many bullets are they going to be able to dodge on the Chicago PP?
END OF 1ST PERIOD
BOS - 0
CHI - 0
SHOTS ON GOAL: CHI 15, BOS 5
Needless to say the key for the B's at the moment is staying out of the box. Not only do they face a constant PP but their SH units have got to be getting winded.
Penalty on Chicago 57 secs into the 2nd. Let's hope the refs are attempting to even things out a bit. And let's hope the B's can score on their PP!
Still no score halfway through the 2nd period. Chicago's shot total is up to 25. Thomas playing amazing...against!
Marco Sturm with a goal for the B's! Nice tip in. Assists go to Chara & Bergeron.
END OF 2ND PERIOD
BRUINS 1
BLACKHAWKS 0
Chicago leads in shots: 27-18
One more goal would be huge for the B's. Thomas deserves a bit of breathing room!
On replay I think that was more of a pass from Chara than a tip in, even though he sent it towards the net and Sturm just re-directed it. Nice puck movement on the PP for the B's.
Their goaltending and special teams have them up in this one!
Mike Milbury is doing his best impersonation of Craig Sager tonight. Horrible look.
Thornton is playing solid tonight...just pure hockey-wise. He has more skill than I realized. He's just a 4th liner, but he's more than just a straight good.
Thomas is making some ridiculous saves!
Dumb penalty by Kobasew....seconds later a PP goal by Chicago.
Tie game: 1-1.
Toews assisted by Kane. Nice tip.
B's score!!!!!!!!
2-1! Sick play by Krejci and Sturm throws the rebound in an empty net. Krejci deserves 99% of the credit for that goal. Awesome job.
Goal is waived off! F*@(!!!
Blake Wheeler called for interfering with the goalie, but no penalty, just the goal waived off. Weird.
Back to a tie game. Too bad.
Tough play by Ryder draws a penalty for hooking.
B's go on the PP with 8:16 left.
Wheeler offsides....he needs to do something to make up for this brain freeze.
Lousy PP by the B's.
Crazy bounce, goalie almost caught out of net for CHI but B's couldn't capitalize.
I'd love to see Kobasew or Wheeler get the winner. They each owe us a goal as far as I can tell.
Ryder gets called for interference on a VERY chinsy call with 4 minutes left. Need 1 more solid penalty kill.
B's kill off the penalty pretty easily. 2 mins to go....
END OF REGULATIONS
BRUINS 1
BLACKHAWKS 1
Shots 31 each
Hunwick coughs it up and Ward is forced to bring down Sharp from behind.
Penalty shot coming up in OT!!!!
Sharp comes in......
Thomas save!!!!
Wow, how often do you see a Penalty Shot in OT?
Campbell might be the fastest defenseman in the league.
Some nice chances by the B's with under 30 seconds to go. Chara and Ward both with big slappers.
END OF OVERTIME......tied 1-1
Great game!!!
Shots are now 38-31 Boston. Amazing when you consider it was 15-5 Chicago after the 1st. So 33-16 Boston since then. Boston owned OT but the Hawks still had multiple scoring chances of their own, not the least of which was the penalty shot. Sick game. Time for the shootout.....
Chicago goes first.......
Toews goes upper corner and Thomas gets it with the glove.
Boston...
Wheeler with a sweet deke on his 1st ever shootout chance.
1-0 Boston. Well done.
Chicago Round 2:
Kane goes 5-hole with a little flip. Just waited until something opened up. Impressive.
1-1
Boston Round 2:
Kessel tries to go 5-hole coming in from the side. Stopped.
1-1
Chicago Round #3
Bolland with a move that doesn't work. Thomas holds his ground and stuffs it.
1-1
Boston Round #3
Axelsson goes all the way to the boards, cuts back to the net, then cuts back and roofs it.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!
PJ wins it for the B's!!!!
Great game. Great sports night in Boston: 2-0, beat the Hawks and 'Hawks in the same night. Awesome!!!
3 STARS:
1-THOMAS
2-CHARA
3-STURM
I read that Julien picked Ax & Wheeler because they've been so good in practice lately. Why don't they always pick the guys that way? Makes perfect sense to me.
