Mid-Week Miscellaneous (or “Miscellaneous Classic” as it’s known in some circles) returns after a one week hiatus. And, as always, there are plenty of topics throughout the world of sports to discuss. A few that have caught my attention: The 2008 World Series is underway, is anyone paying attention? And, if you are, who are you rooting for? The poll on here indicates a fairly even split between the Phillies, Rays and not caring at all. Boston College has broken into the AP Top 25 (#23), and with upcoming games against North Carolina and Clemson they could continue to climb. Once again, does anyone care? 43-year old Bernard Hopkins absolutely dominated 26-year old Kelly Pavlik last Saturday winning just about every round on every judge’s scorecard. What does that mean/say for the state of boxing? Dallas DeMarcus Ware tied the record for most consecutive games with a sack (10). Can you name (without looking) which former Broncos record he tied? And, do stats such as sacks, or blocked shots in basketball, truly mean anything when they have been tracked for only 25 years? The Bruins have had several games be decided by shootouts already….and not in the B’s favor. But are you in favor of the shootout system to determine winners instead of settling for ties? And of course anything else you’d like to discuss that isn’t covered elsewhere on the site, here is your chance to let loose!

I believe this is going to be the only World Series I don't watch aside from 2003 since 1982. Not because I'm so crushed about the Sox (though I was bummed) but because I can't find a single reason to root for either team. And it's tough for me to watch any sporting event when I can't root for either contestant. If it goes 7 games I'll watch Game 7 just out of the appreciation of the event.
I lied about the World Series backing being divided evenly between Philly, Tampa and I don't care.
Right now it's 6-2-6
if you didn't say broncos I would have said Derrick Thomas or Reggie White
Ware is tied with Simon Fletcher.
I think BC has a shot at finishing top 10 if the run the table. If they do win the next 6 games that would mean that te only team they lost to is GT. GT is currently #18 in the BCS.
As for the Pavlik v. Hopkins fight i was pretty disappointed in Pavliks performance. As for the state of boxing i think its just fine. The question should be whats the state of MMA? EliteXC has folded shortly after scandal about fixing fights..
The Bruins keep losing in shootouts, i think they should spend some practice time on the sootout. They have lost the 2 most recent shootouts 2-1 so the either need a better goalie or some guys who are better at scoring on a break away.
Okay, now that somebody has named Simon Fletcher (without looking it up I hope), this brings me to my bigger point: Who is Simon Fletcher? I consider myself an extremely knowledgeable sports fan, and I have no idea who he is. I've heard the name before, but I couldn't tell you where he went to college, what number he wore or any of the other useless info I usually know about athletes. Weird that somebody in that category for me would have such an impressive record.
Wheeler came in the 7th - Price is clearly their closer this series. Do the Rays make him a closer next year? Or do they trade Kazmir, sign a closer, and put Price in rotation?
Also I want to start a campaign: BAY AND CLAY FOR HOLLIDAY - any takers? I'm happy to throw in another prospect that doesn't rhyme or have a chance on being on our roster in the next 2 years.
scratch that - Price in early - Balfour to close? Do they even have a closer?
This is truly miscellaneous: The Great Gamere arrested for child porn.
Welcome back "Mid-Week Miscellaneous"
It was without looking it up i work with Cowboys fans and we were talking football and they mentioned his name the oter day.
Simon Fletcher DE/LB that played his entire 11 year career with the Broncos (85-95), he was a 2nd rd draft pick from Houston he wore #73. In addition tonow being tied for the NFL record most consecutive sacks he is also the Broncos all time leader in sack with 97.5. He became a starter in 91', but from 89-93 he had 10+ sacks each season. Funny this guy had a pretty good career but never made a pro bowl. In 1988 he had 115 tackles with 9 sacks and an Int and didnt make the pro bowl.
(i did have to llok this stuff up)
97.5 sacks? Amazing....that's only 2.5 less that Andre Tippett if I'm not mistaken. Simon Fletcher may be the most under-appreciated player of my lifetime. No Pro Bowls? Crazy.
On an unrelated note, very interesting Penn State vs Ohio State battle in college football today. One of those games (like Oklahoma vs Texas) that can suck in sports fans, not just fans of the teams. I'm predicting a big win for State.
Happy Birthday to Dave Cowens, Mike Eruzione and Pedro Martinez (a slightly random Boston sports threesome)
BC is losing right now to UNC 31-17, looks like there top 25 life is about to be cut short.
Penn State will beat Ohio State today. They have lost 7 in a row in Ohio but today that will change. The better of the 2 games mentioned will be the Texas vs. Oklahoma State game. Texas will win but OSU always give UT alot of trouble. Interesting how 2 of the biggest games of the day involve OSU.
DK you are correct Tippett has 100 career sacks.
If anyone saw any of that BC game they would realize that they Eagles have absolutely no business being in the Top 25.
Anyone see Singletary handle that Vernon Davis situation in San Fran? LOVED IT!
Couldnt agree more about the Davis situation in San Fran. And DK you right about O'Sullivan being benched real soon (from the cut Cassel some slack post).
