Plenty to talk about with all of our sports teams in this week’s edition of Mid-Week Miscellaneous. Tonight is the Celtics pre-season opener. With the starters already having a year under their belts playing together the pre-season should be a great time to get to know new faces like 1st round pick J.R. Giddens and fellow rookie Bill Walker, who I have huge hopes for. Excited to see anything else about the green team before the regular season begins? Speaking of regular season, the Bruins begin theirs tomorrow night, but hold off on your hockey talk for now because there will be a B’s post and an NHL preview coming tomorrow night. There has been plenty of Sox talk all over the site, but any thoughts about the NLCS? Are you hoping Manny & Co escape from the N.L. bracket to face the Sox/Rays winner, or are you hoping the Phillies knock of the team from Tinseltown? Pats have opted to stay out west for the week in between their San Fran and San Diego games. Is it better they avoid the cross country flights or will they miss the comforts of home? And at 3-1 are you starting to feel good about our NFL entrant once again? And, of course, anything else you’d like to talk about from baseball’s World Series to the World Series of Poker, or anything in between, here is your chance to do so…Wednesday, October 8, 2008

Anyone see the Celtics game tonight? I only saw the highlights and the box score. From that it looked like Patrick O'Bryant played well. Good stuff. I also honestly forgot we had re-signed Eddie House (forgive me, not quite in hoops mode yet) and it looks like E-House was a treat. Good stuff.
If you watched the game chime in....
I'd like to ask what 2 people have picked the Rays to win the ALCS.? I would assume they are not true fans and just happened to stop by the site and thats ok. Welcome to RBSF please continue to read and post. But also could you explain your choice of the Rays?
BC is 4-1 overall (1-1 in conf) Oct 18 they have a big game against Va Tech 5-1 overall (2-0 in conf). BC has played in 9 straight bowls winning 8 of them. They have also finished in the Top 25 in 5 of those seasons. BC doesnt have the same caliber team they've had in recent years but they have a shot at winning the conf and making/winning another bowl game. SUPPORT THE EAGLES!!
i saw the first half of the celtics. ray allen looks good. o'bryant played well too. hes a legit 5.
as for bc i just cant get into college football. i wish there was a playoff. that would interest me more. then id care if bc had a shot at making the tourney. im not really into college hoops either but i do love the march madness.
maybe jbs picked the rays. he picked the angels and we saw how great that worked out for him.
Pats are 3-1 coming off a convincing win (and an 18-1 season).
San Diego is 2-3 and just lost to Miami.
The Pats have beat SD the last 3 times the teams have played including a 21-12 win in the playoffs last year.
San Diego is a 5-1/2 point favorite.
Doesn't seem right to me.
The most recent team to try staying on the opposite side of the country for a week between games was the Cardinals. In the second game they got their asses handed to them by the Jets. Maybe this isn't the best strategy.
E. House Jr. appears to be in mid season form with towel waving and cheering.
I'd love to see the Eagles beat Va Tech. They always seem to have more than their share of punks and I find them to be a very unlikable program. Couldn't agree more on the need for a playoffs on college football. It seems so obvious I can't believe it hasn't gotten done yet. There has got to be a money reason behind it.
Speaking of BC, the Eagles will raise the NCAA hockey champions banner this week.
Did you all see Bill Walker's dunks? So good.
The dunk over Ratliff was awesome. The best part was the reaction of the guys on the bench.
This is clearly the best Walker the Celtics have ever had.
I think it was a good move to stay out West for the week. It seems nonsensical to being flying cross country back and forth in such a short period of time. I don't know the specifics of where they are practicing or what facilities they are using, but when in doubt, in Belichick I trust.
I am happy the Pats have a good record.
I am concerned though that our kicker seems to finish in the top 2 or so every week for Player of the Week.
PacMan, sorry Adam Jones screws up again.
Like I said, shouldn't have reinstated him [first time out].
Division 1 college footbal definitely keeps the bowl system for money. Division 2 and 3 seem to be able to run a playoff perfectly fine with 32 teams and still be able to finish before Christmas.
If the Pro's adopted a bowl system the Pats wouldn't have 1 title (possibly 2 since they lost to the Steelers week 6 of 04). The Giants wouldnt have one form last year. It is stupid and money driven.
I get that it has something to do with money, but I don't get why a bowl system is more profitable than a playoff. If you ever turn on a game like the Cotton Bowl that is a big bowl but not the #1 vs #2 game, the stands are half empty and I can't imagine the TV audience is that great.
If that same game was for a team playing to get into the final four it would be must see TV, it would probably be sold out, and it would be great football.
More sponsors. Allows a different facet of advertising and way more companies to get involved.
BS though, I agree. And no I don't watch the CarQuest Bowl.
the colleges like it because they receive money for the bowls that they play in, and the ncaa likes it because they get the advertising money from the different companies.
Last year I was told that the companies do not plan to generate new business, but it is more about brand recognition. Tostitos is not trying to get you to go to the store at halftime to buy a bag of chips, but the next time you are at the store you will buy tostitos because you remember seeing the label, or hear about the product - impulse buying.
Timlin on ALCS roster. Only use him if we are up or down by 5 or more runs...or if we head into the 18th inning of any game.
Can't they still call it the CarQuest Bowl but have it be a playoff game?
CarQuest sweet 16 game.
I think it opens up an opportunity for new sponsors.
•The Final Four (Seasons)Game
•The Great (After) Eight (Dinner Mints) Playoff game
•The (my)Sweet 16 (reality show) playoff game.
I think that 16 would be enough for me. That would only require 4 weeks of games. I'd even be in favor of only 8 teams and 3 weeks of games.
PacMan cleared by the Cowboys of wrong doing and PacMan's bodyguard, supplied by the Cowboys, is not pressing charges.....shocking.
Has NASCAR always had this much fighting? I mean actual ATTEMPTS at a physical altercations? It seems like much of this is slightly intentional to get more viewers to follow the sport as every fight that happens makes into the top 5 stories of the day on ESPN. As for the rules on these fights - where is the logic? When an NBA player fights, they get suspended from multople games...not NASCAR drivers. When MLB players fight, real punches are thrown....not NASCAR drivers. When hockey players fight, they are allowed to and it is part of the sport....not NASCAR drivers. Let's not be vague on the rules - either suspend them for poor conduct...or just let them fight - square off with a referee present - no intervention. Enough of this glorified shoving match that ends up have entire pit crews just lightly tap each other and point. They should actually let these guys go at it - that would be the real deal.
A Div-1 (FBS) college football playoff system has to wait until the BCS contract expires in 2011. Not sure the exact date in 2011 i assume it would mean the 2011 season would be played under the BCS system but the possability of a playoff system could be 2012.
The non-playoff bowls could/should still exist even if they had a playoff, but those sponsors are saying nobody will care about their games if a playoff is in place. Sort of like sponsoring the NIT. My question, which I raised in a previous Weekend Grudge, does anyone aside from fans of the particular schools playing really care about those bowls now?
I could care less about any bowl that Wisconsin is not in. Even the ones they are in are not even close to as interesting as a regular season game vs Michigan/Penn State/Ohio St. It is a joke. The only think that is interesting is seeing the matchups on paper between good teams that would never dare try and play each other in the regular season out of fear of not being in the BCS. It is ridiculous.
Tomorrow's Oklahoma-Texas game = can you imagine if they had to play each other also in an elimination game? Isn't that what it is all about
Clay Billingsley is unravelling...yet...he strikes out Howard looking before I finished my sentence
Howard struck out 199 times this year, that's still not saying much.
Texas/Oklahoma game could also go a long way in determining a Heisman winner.
BARF
Did you see the Mangini story? So ridiculous.
"There's a new Brett in Eric Mangini's life.
Zack Brett Mangini was born early Friday -- also Brett Favre's 39th birthday -- and the New York Jets coach and his wife, Julie, gave their third son a middle name fit for an iconic, gunslinging quarterback. "
the UT vs. OU is basically an elimination game, the losing team will pretty much eliminate themselves from the BCS Championship game.
As far as all of the bowls they have, even though the teams may not be in the top 25 and might only have 6 wins some of those games are full of excitement.
Seriously, can we start putting up "no one" as an option for Pats player of the Week?
