Celtics yesterday waived goodbye to free agent Darius Miles, cutting their roster down to 15. With 16 players originally in camp and only 15 roster spots available, somebody had to go. Unfortunately for Miles this became a numbers game as everyone’s contract on the roster was guaranteed other than those of Miles, Sam Cassell and the rookies. Since neither rookie was likely getting the boot (especially after the athleticism Bill Walker has shown in preseason thus far) that narrowed the cut down to Miles or Cassell. The only other option would be to eat the contract of a guaranteed deal (Brian Scalabrine?), but the likelihood of that happening was minimal. Although I supported the idea of bringing in Miles I am not surprised at all by the cut. He clearly looks like he is still capable of playing in the NBA, but he looks closer to 37 than 27 (which he shockingly is) and never made his presence felt in the preseason. This means Sam-I-Am has a job once again, but unlike last year when he was brought in to be a scoring threat off the bench, this year he is likely just a mentor for Gabe Pruitt and Rajon Rondo, and an assistant coach in training.Tuesday, October 21, 2008
Celtics Roster Down to 15: Miles Waived

Cassell, Walker, Scalabrine..breathe!
I cant believe we are keeping Scalabrine. That guy is just a joke. At least with miles there was some upside. Scalabrine is just a fat out of shape NBA player who has limited skills.
They cant get rid of Scalabrine too much money owed. I cant belive the Celts offered to pay him so much money, they still owe him over 6 million for the 2 years. Miles was the right choice. He wouldnt be playing the begin of the season and even when he was gonna be able to play we dont know what he'd be able to do. Looks like Miles will back doing cameos in movies.
Still waiting on a PoloBear's Scalabrine nickname. My 7 year old recognizes that Scababrine is useless, why can't the Celts? From recent comments, Ainge is either in love with him or is being blackmailed by him.
Not a defense of Scalabrine in any way, but we will not miss Miles. He is a dud and has not progressed a lick in 8 years. We also have Baby and Powe coming off the bench at forward, it is not like Miles would provide an outside shot, or something they don't.
Good point Luke. I think it just irks me (I'm jealous) that Scalabrine is there.
Agreed...both are useless. It's just a matter of Miles being non-guaranteed and thus being a cheaper useless to cut.
It was worth a shot.
Miles seriously has the look of a guy that should be dominated a league at the Y...but no business in the NBA.
I was real hopeful that Miles would step up here but after watching in oreseason it's clear that are bench is deep. Baby, Powe, O'bryant & Walker are going to be getting all the reserve minutes. Miles will def be picked up by someone, are team is just too stacked with talent for him to compete.
Scal is still the worst player in NBA. He's got to have so photos of Ainge or something.
