Sox on the Farm: Scottsdale Scorpions

In this week’s edition of “Sox on the Farm” we take a look at the Red Sox contingency heading out to play in the Arizona Fall League. The Sox will send 7 prospects to play for the Scottsdale Scorpions, a team made up of prospects from the Red Sox, Astros, Angels, Pirates and Giants systems. Three of the players have previously been featured in this space: Mark Wagner (C), Josh Reddick (OF) and Clay Buchholz (P). (Click on their names to review reports). Let's take a look at the Sox other AFL participants…Aaron Bates (1B/DH): 24-year old was 3rd Round pick in the 2006 Draft out of NC State. Showed great power at Single-A Lancaster, hitting 24 HR in just 98 games in ’07, but struggled somewhat after being promoted to Double-A Portland (.263, 15 HR in 151 games over 2007-08). T.J. Large (P): 25-year old RH reliever was 46th Round pick in ’05 out of Alabama-Tuscaloosa. Split 2008 between Lancaster and Portland, going a combined 2-3 with a 4.46 ERA. Had 75 K and 37 BB in 70.2 IP. Ryne Lawson (P): 23-year old RHP was 30th Round pick in ’06 out of West Alabama. Converted back to starter midway through ’08. Split time between Single-A Greenville and Portland. Posted combined 5-4 record with 3.59 ERA. In 110.1 IP he had 73 K and 51 BB. Beau Vaughn (P): 27 year-old RH reliever split ’08 between Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket, posting a 3-2 record and 2.33 ERA in 46 games. Was closer in Portland and registered 16 saves. Had 69 K and 24 BB in 58 IP.

Just in case you didn't realize already, the Arizona Fall League is not joke. It has existed since 1992 and in 2001 they created a Hall of Fame. Members include....

Nomar Garciaparra
Derek Jeter
Mike Piazza
Jason Giambi
Shawn Green
Todd Helton
Garret Anderson
Albert Pujols
Troy Percival
Roy Halladay
Alfonso Soriano
Torii Hunter
Derrek Lee
Jermaine Dye
Jimmy Rollins

Last year Evan Longoria played for the Scorpians...and so did Michael Jordan way back when.

It's also a big deal for potential managers.....Terry Francona, Dusty Baker, Jerry Manuel, Mike Scioscia, Tony Pena, Grady Little and Ken Macha.

I hope Buchholz takes this serious. He has potential to be great, hopefully he doesnt see this as punishment but as an opportunity to get it together.

Couldn't agree more...this could be huge for Clay if he makes the most of it. Theo said he's being sent there to "work on something" but wouldn't say what that something is. I would guess it's his delivery, which they tried to change this year with some obviously poor results.

Buchholz has the potential to be in the rotation next year or be in the minors again. If he has a successful AFL perhaps the Sox will look to deal him? I'd imagine his stock is not great at the moment (as great as it should be).

Just read that the plan for Buchholz is 5 starts, 5 innings per start.
