Pats Report: Game 3 vs Dolphins

On paper this is perhaps the biggest mismatch on the entire NFL schedule. The Patriots, 16-0 in 2007 and 2-0 in 2008, play host to the Miami Dolphins (1-15, 0-2). But, as we all know, the games are not won and lost on paper. There is extra incentive since no franchise (aside from the Giants) likely took more pleasure in the Pats perfect season coming to an end than the folks in Miami. Some issues for the week: The Dolphins have been outscored 42-3 in the 1st & 3rd Quarters, and outscored opponents 21-9 in the 2nd & 4th Quarters….so look for the Pats to come out flying. The Dolphins seems to have a strong running game with Ronnie Brown & Ricky Williams, but have been horrible so far this year. And what can Matt Cassel do against a Dolphins D that allowed Kurt Warner to throw for 376 yards, 3 TD and 0 INT last week? Will the Pats D, led by Seymour, Mayo and Hobbs, continue to look solid? Can the secondary hold up? Will Chad Pennington make the Pats regret not making a bigger push to sign him? Will Bill Parcells be shown on TV 1,000 times during the game? Chime in on all things pre-game, post-game and everything in between right here as the Pats look to stay unbeaten in ’08…..

Sorry for the delay getting this post on here....

Nice return by Hobbs...but garbage first possession for the Pats.

DK said...

Although just a 28-yard punt by Hanson that is more productive than him booting it 43-yards into the end zone like he's been doing.

DK said...

Nice play by Seymour knocking down the pass attempt on 3rd down. He has looked GREAT so far in '08.

DK said...

Very nice run by Sammy Morris...great blocking, including LaMont Jordan.

This drive is MUCH more like it!

DK said...

Was really hoping Joey Porter didn't get a reason to celebrate all game...but good move by Cassel to take a sack instead of throwing it away in the red zone.

DK said...

In the grasp???? If that counts as in the grasp the Pats would have won the Super Bowl. Eli was certainly "in the grasp" on the Tyree play.

Either way not great pass protection 2 plays in a row.

DK said...

Throwing an interception to a defensive lineman is inexcusable...especially in the red zone. Horrible pass by Cassel.

We just need him to play mistake-free football and on talent alone we will win this game easily.

DK said...

Is Fasano giving a tribute to Ben Coates?

DK said...

The D looked horrendous that drive...capped by a Ronnie Brown TD (who is sitting on the bench of my fantasy team).

Being down 7-0 to a team that has been dominated in the 1st Quarter of games in not a good sign.

Liked the end around call. Gotta breat out of the predictable play calling.

DuffMan said...

I know the Dolphins have the worst pass defense, but I htink the Pats just need to run it down their throats.

DuffMan said...

Gutsy call letting Cassel pass on 4th down.

DK said...

I agree...their run defense looks horrible to me and we are forcing the pass just because it should be there.

DK said...

Is 54 yards out of Gostowski's range? He seems to be booting it this year, I was hoping he'd try (thought obviously I prefer the 1st down)

DK said...

What the F is going on with our pass defense? I'd like to see a replay to show who is supposed to be covering these tight ends. That is what is killing us right now.

DK said...

On those replays it looks like the wide receivers for Miami are running fly patters, the Pats safteys are following them and the middle of the field is wide open for the Dolphins tight ends.

Have faith in the corners!

DK said...

To be upset about the Pats and my fantasy team at once (a 2nd Ronnie Brown TD) is painful.

DK said...

I feel like Bruschi is not without blame on this tight end barrage...but I could be wrong. Hoping they give us a more insightful breakdown at half than these announcers are doing...but it is tough with Miami using a hurry up offense.

Que O'Connell.

gmac said...

I'm able to watch the game but from what i'm reading and seeing on here its pretty F'ing terrible right now.

gmac said...

not able.

DK said...

Why would Cassel help the guy up after he tipped his pass? That is ridiculous. I honestly don't think I've ever seen a QB help up a DL before...we're losing, worry about that Matty.

DK said...

Pretty f'ing terrible is a pretty good summary so far GMAC.

DK said...

14-6....feels far worse.

Need a stop on this drive.

DK said...

By the way, on that last drive the Dolphins EASILY could have picked one and possibly run it back on the way, but the guy got ahead of himself and it bounced off his fingertips and Welker caught it. Could be a turning point in the game (hopefully).

DK said...

Screen to Williams and he got 4 additional yards with Bruschi handing on him....why can't he tackle anybody at the point of impact???

DK said...

Mayo just Williams and knocked him back a yard...what a difference.

p.s. - Bruschi was 3rd man to dive on top that time.

DK said...

Our safetys and MLBs look so useless.

DK said...

I just heard Kerry Collins just became the 15th player in NFL history with 35k passing yards. Really? Kerry Collins? Weird.

gmac said...

What the hell is going on with our D, the Dolphins are in the red zone again...

DK said...

Pennington: 12-14, 166 yards with 1:03 left in the 1st Half.

We deserve to be losing this bad, if not worse.

gmac said...

Collins is a pretty good QB and always has been. Never great but always good.

DK said...

TD up the middle for Ronnie Brown

Announcers just said "I'm surprised the Patriots have not made an adjustment"

COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!!!!!!!!!

DuffMan said...

I can't remember the last time I saw the Patriots defense pay so poorly.

DK said...

The Dolphins own the middle of the field. Period. It is absolutely disgusting right now what is happening on defense...

gmac said...

Brown another TD. are you kidding me. There better some real big halftime adjustments. The Dolphins are the last time to beat NE in the regular season.

DK said...

2 sacks for Joey Porter? Yuck.

gmac said...

Porter 2 sacks. Didnt he say that's what they were gonna do is come after Cassel all day. Looks like the D and the o-line are sucking today.

DK said...

Hate to say it but the Pats are being out-coached right now.

Down 21-6 at halftime to the Miami Dolphins.

Not a misprint.

gmac said...

Here's my halftime speech to the team.

Block and tackle, knock someone on their ass. Brandon is our leading tackler in the 1st half that means the DL and LB are letting guys get by them. Dont forget that weed head Williams has more rushing yards than Sammy does. Start playing football we went 18-1 last year and you are getting beat by a team that went 1-15. Get out there in win the F'n game, it aint over til its over.

(probably nothing like whats really going on in the locker room)

I know the Ryder Cup is a huge deal to the golf world, but it's funny to change the channel from an NFL game to a golf match and have the excitement level go up about 1,000 fold.

Guess it speaks volumes of the Cup AND the Pats game this afternoon.

DK said...

Merriweather is the leading tackler because the keep dumping the ball over the heads of the lineman, the linebackers are nowhere to be found, and the safetys are the only thing between the Fins and the end zone...so it's a very deceiving total. Much like Bruschi's one solo tackle, which he got dragged 5 yards on, or one of his assists, when he just dove on top of a pile.

I feel bad I wasn't blogging last week just because it was clearly Bruschi's best game.

gmac said...

here's something positive about this game. The Sox are winning right now 3-0

DuffMan said...

Pats D with a much needed 3 an dout.

DK said...

Pats are 100% determined to pass regardless of whether or not it's working (which it's not)

We had a nice 3-and-out on D to start the half and the offense goes 3-and-out to give it right back.

Neither side is picking up the other side at all right now.

DK said...

I'm trying to watch the Pats, Sox, Ryder Cup, follow my fantasy team and blog at the same time...I think my head may explode.

DK said...

Looks like the Pats have taken out Bruschi and moved Thomas into the middle. If this is true I couldn't be happier about it....

DK said...

GREAT play by Bruschi and Warren on that one

DK said...

..and followed up by Pennington avoiding the rush, dumping it off and getting a 1st down. Unbelievable.

DK said...

Rodney just injured Bruschi.

He may be all done.

DK said...

This is possibly the most frustrated regular season game I can remember watching the Pats play...ever.

I'm not exaggerating at all.

DK said...

Great return by Hobbs..almost went the distance.

Starting at the 22 they NEED to score a TD here.

DK said...

Pats are running their offense in slow motion...get up to the line!!!!

It takes them the full play clock to run plays.

DuffMan said...

Got your TD. Onside kick here?

DK said...

TOUCHDOWN!!!! Really nice pass and catch by Gafney. That was huge if they want any chance here.

Bullet pass by Cassel, well done.

There is still life for sure.

DK said...

I think the Pats need a turnover here. Would be huge.

Ellis?

They also have to hope the Dolphins start to play tight with the game winding down. Right now Miami is playing as loose as I've ever seen any team play vs NE. Can that continue? (Coach & QB both deserve lots of credit for that)

DK said...

Great start...Dolphins on their 15.

DuffMan said...

Nice job by the kickoff team. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going.

DK said...

...and Dolphins dump it over D-Line into middle of field for 9-yard pickup. Unreal that that is still working.

DK said...

Are you kidding me? Another Brown TD...62 yard TD for Brown? Holy Sh*t.

I may be done watching this game...my weekend is too short to torture myself like this.

DK said...

Matt Cassel fumble...knocked loose by Joey Porter. Worst case scenario.

David Thomas was open by about 30 yards...unreal.

Time to make a change in this game.

DK said...

As I said in my post, this is why they don't play the games on paper.

DK said...

Uh-oh, who's hurt?

DK said...

Meriweather...walked off on his own.

DuffMan said...

Time to deveote my full attention to the Ryder Cup.

DK said...

Why fair catch the ball on your own 8? I thought the rule of thumb was that if it was inside the 10 you let it go and hope it bounces into the end zone.

DK said...

Cassel has 31 attempts for 131 yards. That is outrageously bad.

DK said...

Sweet QB scramble for 2 yards with your team down 3 TDs in the 4th quarter.

DK said...

Wish they had yanked Cassel to start the 4th like I hoped. He seriously could not look worse.

That said, the D is the prime reason we are getting slaughtered.

And, I said it at halftime, the Pats are getting outcoached.

DK said...

I would be playing lots of backups, not just at QB, right now.

Disgusting performance by the Pats.

DK said...

Adalius Thomas has been in the right place and failed to wrap up the guy about 5 times today.

DK said...

Looks like fans at The Edge gave up long before I did...the place is 75% empty.

That Miami FG makes it 25 points, which means 4 scores (at least)...which means game over.

PUT IN O'CONNELL

(the only reason he may not is because of the public perception that yanking your QB gives, which is that it was his fault, and this was not)

DK said...

...and if you couldn't tell, my towel has officially been thrown in.

gmac said...

Here's how good the Pats D was today, they were my starting D for FF and they got me -2 points

DK said...

Any nominees for Pats player of the game? (aside from "nobody")

tombosley said...

The red zone offense is awful.
The defense played horrible.
The offensive line played horrible.
I am going to sleep now, and I will try to forget ever watching this game.
