This week's "Sox on the Farm" is no longer on the farm...he's on his way to Fenway to make his major league debut for the big league team tonight. The promotion is well deserved as Zink has gone 13-4 with a 2.89 ERA at Pawtucket while leading the IL with 152.1 IP. A look at the 29-year old's scouting report from soxprospects.com...Scouting Report: Zink was signed as an undrafted free agent on the recommendation of Luis Tiant, his former coach at Savannah College of Art and Design. Tim Wakefield has tutored Zink on the fine art of the knuckleball. Zink understands what he needs to do to get hitters out. Good athlete. Also throws mid 80s fastball and cutter for strikes, using the same delivery as his knuckler. Fearless with his knuckleball, even behind in the count.

Jimmy: Hey, what gives?
Jimmy's Dad: You said you wanted to live in a world without zinc Jimmy. Well now your car has no battery.
Jimmy: But I promised Betty I'd pick her up by 6:00. I better give her a call.
Jimmy's Dad: Sorry Jimmy. Without zinc for the rotary mechanism, there are no telephones.
Jimmy: Dear God! What have I done?
(Jimmy pulls out a gun and points it to his head and fires)
Jimmy's Dad: Think again Jimmy. You see the firing pin in your gun was made out of…yep…zinc.
Jimmy: Come back zinc, Come Back!!
Sox get Paul Byrd. BTC (Better than Clay)
Happy to have Buckholtz out of the rotation, but how good is Byrd without his HGH?
Byrd is 4-0 since the break. I'll take it.
Post all star stats
Byrd = 4 - 0, 1.24 ERA, 4 starts, 29 innings, opp avg = .231
Buchholz = 0 - 4, 7.46 ERA, 5 starts, 25.1 innings, opp avg = .324
good work, Theo.
I think Zink had a chance to find a spot in the rotation not just a spot start, but w/ the signing of Byrd i think that spot will be next year. Havent seen the kid pitch but i have really high expectations for him. His Knuckleball is supposed to be real good and the other pitches he throws about 10-15 mph faster than Wake.
Figures the Sox play a team from Texas but the games thats on TV in my area is the Astros.
10-2 in the 2nd i guess the Sox really wanna make Zink comfortable.
no Sox for me so i'm gonna go watch Phelps set some records.
ps. i got a free fantasty football league if anyone wants in.
The Red Sox got their inner Patriots on tonight. What a ridiculous win...DK, you were at the game. Please recap this historic night. Looks like Zink should not be a MLB player, but thank goodness for Pedroia, Ortiz, Youk...among others.
DK - was any Sox pitcher effective?
Was Zink as bad as the box score shows? What was so wrong?
This season I've been at Opening Day, Lester's no-hitter, a 13-inning win against and now this. Very memorable season at Fenway for me thus far (and the Sox are now 6-0 with me there!)
Once thing in Zink's defense is that on top of it being his first major league start he was pitching on only 3 days rest for the first time all year. He also had to sit in the dugout for about a half hour after pitching a 1-2-3 first. Then, since he had a 10-0 lead, his main focus seemed to be not to give up any walks, but it ended up with him leaving too many balls over the plate. Not a good performance, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't give up on him yet either.
As for the game...terrible defense and pitching by both teams for the most part. Nice to see Youk end up the hero after he went 0-2 with 2 K's in a 10-run first. Proved that every time you thought this game was figured out it was far from that.
Hopefully that doesn't crush Zink's confidence for good.
