Seems there is a lot to talk about in this week’s edition of “Mid-Week Miscellaneous”. Let’s start with the Sox acquisition of Mark Kotsay from Atlanta this afternoon. Kotsay, 32, is a 12-year veteran and lifetime .282 hitter. He has good speed, plays good defense, and can play all three outfield positions. This year he has appeared in 88 games, hitting .289 with 6 HR, 37 RBI, and zero errors in 173 chances defensively. He appears to be taking the spot originally pegged for Brian Giles, who opted not to come to Boston. So is this a good move by the Sox, adding another quality veteran, or a simply a bad sign that J.D. Drew might be gone for good in ’08? In other Sox news, Clay Buchholz made a solid start in his first outing for the Sea Dogs in Portland….is there still hope that he will be a star for the Sox someday or have you lost faith in Clay? And this week marked the release of the Sports Illustrated pre-season NFL issue….so do you believe in jinxes? Tom Brady is on the cover and the Pats are their pre-season pick to win the Super Bowl (over Philly). How about Oscar De la Hoya agreeing to fight Manny Pacquio in December…do you care? Will you buy it? Is this the most interesting fight boxing can put together right now? Anything else you’d like to discuss, including badminton withdrawal after the Olympics, here is your post to do it…..Wednesday, August 27, 2008

I'm choosing not to let the Kotsay pickup get me too worried about Drew. They tried to get Giles when Drew was still healthy (I think) so this isn't likely any different (I hope).
Also in SI this week, Peter King ranks the Top 50 players in the NFL.
#1-Brady
#4-Moss
#44-Welker
I feel like Mankins should have been on there, but that is just hometown bias I suppose. Seymour is deservedly not on there by last year's play, but I'd still say he's one of the 50 best players in the NFL.
Walpole Joe, India may not be the least athletic country after all...at least they won 3 medals. They most polulous countries to win zero:
1. Pakistan
2. Bangledesh
3. Phillipines
By this ranking the most athletic countries (medals per capita) are:
1. Bahamas
2. Jamaica
3. Iceland
4. Slovenia
5. Australia
(US = 45; China = 68)
Most athletic state (same method):
1. Hawaii
2. Maine
3. Alaska
4. California
5. Washington DC
6. Washington
(and yes, I know DC isn't a state)
Greetings from the most athletic state.
My random miscellaneous is that Mission Viejo High School football team from Orange County CA (a USC/Pac 10 breeding ground - USC QB Mark Sanchez went there) is here in Maui playing a local high school team. I met a mom of an offensive lineman who said that her son may not play much this year...and he is 6'4, 270 lbs. I cannot imagine any high school not starting this guy on the OL.
Hawaii is supposed to be paradise...and you have chosen to spend your time there on this site. Well done JBS!
As for the lineman, I am pretty sure my high school had a starting offensive guard that was 5'9 185 one year. Not kidding.
Havent lost all faith in Clay, he did throw a no hitter in the majors.
I like Kotsay he's a real good player. maybe amazing or great..sorry couldnt resist.
The Madden curse is the only real jinx..Favre on the cover but in a different uniform than he will be wearing this season..also most consecutive games started will see if Favre can break the Madden curse.
I dont think its a jinx but i have seen the SI NFL report be not even close in past years i mean 1st places teams finishing last..sorry dont have a year to ref here.
I wil pay for the Golden Boy v. Pacman.
Adam "Pacman" Jones has been reinstated, does anyone think he can make it the whole season with out getting into something?
Maybe this season.. just cause he knows he's under the microscope. I don't give him 3 though.
I actually think it was a bit of bull letting him back his first attempt for eligibility. He really messed up that bouncer's life. I am saying that as a guy who likes the Cowboys, and someone who usually is more lenient to athletes, though I am not proud of that at all.
The Cowboys will be fun to watch.
What do you think the odds are on a Cowboys Pats Super Bowl? best of 90's vs. 00's
I'm predicting a Pats-'Boys SB this year.
