Bracing for the Worst with Beckett

How would the Red Sox fare without their ace, Josh Beckett? Unfortunately we may be about to find out. On Sunday the ace lasted just 2.1 innings against Toronto, allowing 8 earned runs. So what happened? Well today we find out about numbness in Beckett’s fingers that will push back his next start. Is this the reason for Sunday’s performance and/or his overall inconsistency in ’08? And if so can it be fixed….and soon? Yes, the Sox may squeeze into the post-season with Beckett putting up average results or even (gulp) unable to pitch for the rest of ’08. But there is absolutely no chance of the Sox defending their title without their ace pitching like the guy we have come to expect in big games. This injury is far different than his past ailments in which things like blisters were tangible; you could tell what was wrong and how long it would take to fix. “Numbness” is very scary….especially when the cause is unknown. So now I am simply hoping for the best (Beckett starts of the Yankees series with a dominant performance in week) while preparing for the worst (he is done for the year…at least).

I really think they should be focusing all of their attention on figuring out what is wrong here and how to fix it...seriously, this scares me big time.

Hopefully this is not something he has been trying to deal with all year. If it has been a season long problem hopefully it didnt do serious damage by trying to tough it out. Even though he hasnt been great this year, i expected him to be great in the playoffs. Hopefully he's alright and wont miss alot of time. But if it is serious i think i would rather have him shut it down now rather than play through it and potentially do more damage.

Maybe Beckett is pulling a Manny and just dodging the Jays this weekend?

He would if they are smart...they own him. I have a conspiracy theory about AJ Burnett helping the Jays get a read on Beckett.

Tito seemed very relaxed about the situation and said they weren't even going to bother running tests...but they were sure it wasn't a clot or anuerysm (sp) or anything of that nature. How do they know that?

Maybe I'm just a worrier.

So are we now supposed to believe that the inflamation of his elbow that is being reported is the cause for the numbness previously reported? And if so has this been inflamed all year? This is one area where I don't understand the need for secrecy.
