This week's edition of "Sox on the Farm" is a little different than those of the past. Although we will be looking at a prospect who may be able to help the Sox down the road, this week's prospect, Yu Darvish, isn't in the Red Sox system....at least not yet. However the 21-year old Japanese starter is likely to follow countryman Daisuke Matsuzaka and head for the U.S. shortly, and when he does so the Sox are likely to be big bidders in the Darvish sweepstakes. Like Dice-K he was a legend from the Koshien National High School Baseball Tournament where he threw a no-hitter his senior year. The following year he was a member of the Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese League. In his 3 seasons he has good from good to downright dominant; 5-5 3.53 in '05; 12-5 2.89 in '06; 15-5 1.82 in '07. In 2006 he led the Fighters to their first Japan Series title since '61, pitching Game 1 and the clinching 4-1 win in Game 5. He then won MVP of the Konami Cup Asia Series (a tourney for the champs of Japan, China, Taiwan and South Korea). Not turning 22 until August he is already the most dominant pitcher in Japan, striking out 210 in 207 innings last year (4.5-to-1 K/BB ratio) to go along with career marks of 32-15, 2.53 ERA and 17 complete games and 6 shutouts in just 64 starts. He has been scouted by some teams since Junior High, but the Sox will certainly be among the top bidders for a prize that is expected to cost upwards of $75 million just for negotiation rights! Making him a "Sox on the Farm" is slightly presumptuous I understand, but since he will likely be heading straight to Fenway I figured this was the only chance I would get.

Forgot to mention, he's 6'5".
Quote from his father (who was educated in the States) on where he would like Yu to pitch if he heads to America "Anywhere in the States is good, but I personally love New England."
Seems like a good fit to me!
If this kid turns out to be as good or better than Dice-K and the Sox sign him, Sox rotation would look nice with.
Beckett
Lester
Dice-K
Buchholz
Yu Darvish
But with that said what about Pauley and Zink? I imagine Darvish will be making the trip to the states next season? The Sox got the money to do it so why not.
They would still have Bowden and Masterson too (among others) but they would certainly make great trading chips to help find a replacement for Manny. (I'm already accepting the fact he wont be back).
I have a feeling a team like the Angels may end up over-bidding and getting Yu, but if it really does go to the $50-75M range how many teams can even think of being in the running? Maybe 5?
From what I can gather we will be betting against the....
Yanks, Dodgers, Cubs, Angels, Mariners, Mets and Braves. The usual suspects I suppose.
One issue with Darvish is that I'm fairly certain the Sox got Dice-K's actual salary at a somewhat discounted rate in a package deal for JD Drew. I say that because it was widely believed we were betting against nobody to get Drew and it's hard for me to believe Theo didn't know that.
Not sure if Yu has an agent, but if he signs with Boras does that mean we need to re-up Tek for 4 more years? Yikes.
Darvish will be pitching in the Olympics this summer...highly recommend trying to catch him. Good chance they will be in the Gold Medal game, hope we will be joining them.
Speaking of paying $75 million for the right to negotiate, would that bother anyone?
I think its kinda expensive considering the young talent we already have. But if i'm not mistaken that money doesnt go towards the salary cap and exempt from the luxury tax. So if both of those are correct and we have the money you can never have enough pitching talent. It could help Dice-K and Dice-K could help Yu transition.
And i figure the Yankees considering their pitching issues will be the biggest competition. The west coast teams mentioned would also be in the running since they are a bit closer to home. Not so sure about Mets and Braves though. But if they are considered just based on having the funds available i would agree.
Do they still make up Team USA with freshaman and sophmores?
