Since the Red Sox first began using uniform numbers in 1931 the franchise has had players wear 73 different uniform numbers in regular seasons games, ranging from #1 to #84. We all now who the greatest #8 and #9 is...but who has been the best BoSox player to wear each of these other numbers? Here is one man's opinion covering all 73 numbers and 72 players (1 number is a tie and 2 players are the best at multiple numbers). Without further ado...1:Bobby Doerr 2:Jerry Remy 3:Jimmie Foxx 4:Joe Cronin 5:Nomar Garciaparra 6:Rico Petrocelli 7:Dominic DiMaggio 8:Carl Yastrzemski 9:Ted Williams 10:Lefty Grove 11:Frank Malzone 12:Ellis Burks 13:John Valentin 14:Jim Rice 15:Dustin Pedroia 16:Jim Lonborg 17:Mel Parnell 18:Johnny Damon 19:Josh Beckett 20:Kevin Youkilis 21:Roger Clemens 22:Bill Campbell 23:Luis Tiant 24:(tie)Dwight Evans & Manny Ramirez 25:Tony Conigliaro 26:Wade Boggs 27:Carlton Fisk 28:Sparky Lyle 29:Keith Foulke 30:John Tudor 31:Jon Lester 32:Derek Lowe 33:Jason Varitek 34:David Ortiz 35:Billy Klaus 36:Tom Gordon 37:Bill Lee 38:Curt Schilling 39:Mike Greenwell 40:Dave Henderson 41:Jeff Reardon 42:Mo Vaughn 43:Dennis Eckersley 44:Orlando Cabrera 45:Pedro Martinez 46:Bob Stanley 47:Bruce Hurst 48:Lee Smith 49:Tim Wakefield 50:Mike Timlin 51:Reid Nichols 52:Mike Boddicker 53:Tomo Ohka 54:Morgan Burkhart 55:Joe Hesketh 56:Darren Bragg 57:Manny Delcarmen 58:Jonathan Papelbon 59:Darryl Irvine 60:David Murphy 61:Bronson Arroyo 62:Jon Lester 63:Justin Masterson 64:Dustin Pedroia 65:Carlos Valdez 66:Joe Cascarella 67:Anastacio Martinez 68:Devern Hansack 77:Josh Bard 81:Lou Lucier 82:Johnny Lazor 83:Eric Gagne and 84:J.T. Why Petrocelli over Pesky for #6 Pesky wore it as a player and coach?
#7 i like Trot but i agree with D. DiMaggio as your pick. If Drew keeps up the numbers and continues this season as good as he has been and about 5-6 more years equal to that. And wins a few titles, I'd have to swing the vote to Drew.
#10 I also agree with Grove but was Rich Gedman even considered?
#11 i have to give to Bill Mueller, didnt play as long as Malzone but was a big part of the 1st World Series in 86 yrs.
#18 Daisuke Matsuzaka unless he ever says i'd never play for the Yankees then goes to play for the Yankees.
#23 i agree with Tiant but did Oil Can get any consideration?
Question about #24 Dewey being Dewey or Manny being Manny who does it get retired for?
Did Mirabelli get any consideration for #28?
#37 could someday go to Oki?????
Ellsbury has the career potential to take #46 from Stanley.
I would call #47 tie between Hurst and Francona, only because of the WS titles for Tito.
#60 Hanley Ramirez is a better player now. And he got us Beckett and Lowell.
GMAC, good post. Here's what I got for you....
#6: I said this was for players, and as a player I think Rico had a better Sox career than Pesky. It's that simple. I hold Pesky in higher regard as a "Red Sox" because of his longstanding relationship with the organization, but Rico certainly had better numbers (not that Pesky's were bad by any stretch). Probably my toughest pick aside form #24 which I refused to pick.
#7: JD still has a LONG way to go to catch Dom. He is a boarderline Hall of Fame player who played his entire career here.
#10: Gedman vs Grove? C'mon GMAC you're better than that. Lefty Grove is in Cooperstown wearing a Red Sox cap. Geddy was good, but c'mon.
#11: Malzone vs Mueller? I'm sticking with my pick. Malzone played 11 years in Boston, was a 6 time All Star, and won 3 Gold Gloves. Mueller played 3 years in Boston, won a batting title and a World Series. I'll stick Malzone.
#18: I'm just basing this on their playing time in Boston but your point is very well taken.
#23: Actually he did...he was runner-up, but had to go with El Tiante.
#28: Mirabelli got consideration. Weak crop for this number, but Lyle clearly wins here.
#37: Oki still has a LONG way to go.
#46: Check back in 5-10 years.
#47: As said, this is players only so Tito wasn't considered. Good call though.
#60: Hanley did nothing with the Sox, and this was based only on what they did for Boston. To talk about the best player ever (Tom Seaver) or best player now (Hanley) that wore numbers I think is a completely different list.
the only question you didnt answer for me was the one about #24. Who will it be retired for Dewey or Manny? or would it be a tie like in the post?
I say #24 gets retired for Manny and the Sox should retire "Dewey" the way the C's retired "Louscy". Just a thought.
This is great info to know.
