All-Time Celtics by the Numbers

Yesterday we took a look at the greatest Red Sox of all-time to wear each number. Today we turn our attention to the Celtics. While numbers like 6 and 33 were obviously easy to choose, others aren't quite so simple. Here's a look at the players who performed the best in each of the 52 numbers, from 00 to 99, that have been worn by Boston Celtics...00:Robert Parish 0:Walter McCarty 3:Dennis Johnson 4:Tony Battie 5:Kevin Garnett 6:Bill Russell 7:Tiny Archibald 8:Antoine Walker 9:Rajon Rondo 10:Jo Jo White 11:Dana Barros 12:Don Chaney 13:Delonte West 14:Bob Cousy 15:Tommy Heinsohn 16:Satch Sanders 17:John Havlicek 18:Dave Cowens 19:Don Nelson 20:Ray Allen 21:Bill Sharman 22:Ed Macauley 23:Frank Ramsey 24:Sam Jones 25:K.C. Jones 26:Rich Johnson 27:Kevin Stacom 28:Quinn Buckner 29:Hank Finkel 30:Mark Blount 31:Cedric Maxwell 32:Kevin McHale 33:Larry Bird 34:Paul Pierce 35:Reggie Lewis 40:Dino Radja 41:James Posey 42:Chris Ford 43:Gerald Henderson 44:Danny Ainge 45:Raef LaFrentz 50:Eddie House 51:Kevinn Pinkney 52:Vitali Potapenko 53:Rick Robey 54:Ed Pinkney 55:Eric Williams 56:Brandon Hunter 66:Scot Pollard 88:Antoine Walker 93:P.J. Brown and 99:Roy Rogers. (if you want to check the complete list and make an argument of your own, click here)

Toughest call...#20 Ray Allen vs Sherman Douglas. If you look at Sherm's stats with Boston I think you'll agree. However Ray was an All Star and a World Champ and that cannot be ignored.

Also, if anyone can find a better photo of the C's retired numbers let me know.

Will Bill Walker take over #12?

Leon Powe will take over #0 this coming year for sure

What number will they give Giddens?

How about David Wesley over Battie at #4?

Speaking of #20, it is a good reminder how much I hate Brian Shaw.

Mark Blount over ML Carr? Come on DK! What ML did for the Celts in the 80's cannot be measured in stats.

#11 to Steve Kuberski in his 1st stint with the C's he had no less than 324 pts in a season, and the 3 pt line didnt exist. So his point total is going to be signifigantly lower...Just i thought.

I really like Barros i got to shoot around with him when i was younger.

At #12 its hard to overlook "The Human Highlight reel" but i understand he only played 77 games for the C's.

#30 i might have to agree Carr over Blount or at least call it a draw.

Perk could take #43 down the road. But good choice for now.

#50 to House over Kite?

I was thinking Kite at 50 too, but I took a look at his career numbers and they are God-awful. He did have one great game against the Lakers in the finals when he had a bunch of rebounds and shut down Kareem Puff.

Gotta agree with WJ (and Gmac) M.L. get the nod from me over Mark Blount.

I loved the clip they showed this FInals of M.L. right off the plane calling the Lakers, & everyone in L.A. the Fakers. It was like an attack on their whole lifestyle.

WJ, you made me dizzy with that post about #51. That really is how he spells Kevinn though. It reminds me of former big leaguer Dann Bilardo.

As for #30....

M.L. Carr
6 years (1979-85)
363 games
6.3 points
2.3 rebounds
1.3 assists
.450 FG%
.758 FT%
2x Champion (1981, 1984)

Mark Blount
6 years (2000-2006)
338 games
7.6 points
4.7 rebounds
.532 FG% (8th in team history)
.731 FT%
0.9 blocks (9th in team history)

I'd say CLEARLY Blount has better numbers, what is the Carr argument based on other than being a good towel waver and being lucky enough to ride pine for two championships?

...and I also hate Brian Shaw.

Carr was a good role player for 2 championship teams. That was really my thought with Carr. Blount has better numbers while playing for weaker Celtics teams.

You gave Ray Allen credit for being a World Champ, but ML doesn't get the same love for being a 2 time World Champ?

-2 time NBA champ

-Sealed sweep with steal and dunk in game 4 over Houston

-Towel waving got players and fans fired up

-My favorite - Wore glasses to mock Kareem puff after getting hit with a cup full of unidentified liquid. This cup incident enraged Max so much that he said "Let's kill those freaks" prior to game 7. Max then had a huge game 7 to carry the Celts to victory (clearly as a result of ML). This is a classic Boston moment and should put him at the top of the #30 list.
-Referred to the Lakers as wimps and preppies prior to the series. Later called them the Fakers. Could you imagine a player doing that now?.

-ML was also an excellent defender and once led the league in steals per game (for Detroit).

This is kind of a useless point, but interesting. At basketballreference.com they have a Hall of Fame monitor to guide how likely a plyer is to be in the HOF.
Michael Leon Carr = 58
Marc Blount = 36
FYI - a player should have a score greater than 135 to have a shot at the HOF.

You can't always go strictly by the numbers. They can be good guidelines, but I go by my eyes.

Mark Blount also got a ridiculously high/undeserved contract. His team wasn't a contender, except when he was on the bench - that money really should've gone to Battie. He at least got boards and played defense. While I didn't mind Blount on the bench, as a starter this was one of Ainge's early blunders. Also, when you think of the Celtics, M.L. Carr is thought of (in a timeline of ALL Celtics, if you will) way ahead of Mark Blount.
They'd never ask that guy to coach, even if Carr did a shit job.

DK said...

Using Carr's coaching isn't going to help (thank god he didn't wear #30 when he coached or he wouldn't even be considered).

Also WJ, I do love what a character he was, but he was a VERY minor player on those title teams. And the stats that you allude to that earn him a higher ranking than Blount were mostly accumulated playing for Detroit before he arrived.

Tough call for sure. Too bad Lenny Bias died or this would have been a no-brainer.

Luke said...

Not as a coach, just the fact that the organization viewed him as such a part that they could ask him to.

I already said he was terrible.

Walpole Joe said...

ML was VERY minor? capitalized VERY? Cut the shit DK. Maybe by '84 he was a minor player, but in the '81 finals he played the 6th highest # of minutes on the team (ahead of McHale, Robey and Henderson). He was a solid contributor in '81 as well as '80 (6th most min.- 19.1 min 9.1 ppg 3.7 rpg 1.2 apg) and '82 he played over half of each playoff game - 25 min......VERY minor? ride the pine?).

He and McHale were pretty equal in number of playoff minutes '81. Would you call McHale VERY minor in '81?

He averaged more MPG in the playoffs than PJ Brown this year and way more than Big Baby and Eddie House. Would you call them VERY minor with capital letters?
He was VERY close to being the James Posey of that team. Was Posey VERY minor or even close to VERY minor?

As mentioned by Luke a lot of things don't show up in stats, like strong D, and as mentioned previously he was a strong defender. He may have been a "character" by the time '84 rolled around, but he was very good one with some classic Boston sports moments. And he was a great teammate by all accounts.
Most maddening is that I would never capitalize VERY minor when describing his contributions to the Celtics.
I would maybe do that for a guy like Scalabrine or Terry Durod.

There is no way that Blount is CLEARLY (again capitalized?) the best #30 in Celtics history. At best it is DEBATABLE.

Mark Blount put up one decent season, got paid, and then disappeared.

ML Carr was in invaluable contributor to the Celtics teams in the 80s (not so much as a GM in the 90s however).

Having seen both play its ML hands down!

Also, channel 4 used to have a segment on during the sports segment of the news called "Ask ML" that was hosted by Bob Lobel.

Conversely, I'm not even sure Blount gets a mention on the vast world wide web.
