Game 6 Discussion & Predictions

The Lakers have come back to Boston with the Celtics. Before the Finals began I said "My gut says Celtics in 6" and there seems no reason to change my mind now. Pierce has been great all series with the exception of Game 3. Ray has been great with the exception of Game 5. It's time for KG to step up big! I think the C's missed Perk more than most may realize last game, and he is likely out tonight. If that is the case Garnett needs to bring the additional toughness that they will be missing without KP43. Pau Gasol cannot back him under the hoop and hold him to fade away shots. Lamar Odom cannot be getting offensive rebounds. The C's need to play like this is the biggest game of their lives...which shouldn't be hard since it likely is. If KG can set the tone with hard-nosed play and Rondo can get back to racking up assists and running the show the Celtics will be able to celebrate the first Boston title in any sport on home soil since 1986. Prediction: Celtics 98-92. MVP (of game and series): Paul Pierce.

As much as I love Leon if Perk is out PJ needs to start. Leon matches up well against the bench of the Lakers much better, and when he is not playing center. The guy is 6'8 at best.

1st quarter will be huge. C's need to give the Lakers a taste of their own medicine coming out of the gate.

I completly agree with DK, Celtics need to start fast, as as quick start will take the Lakers out of there game. I like the C's tonight, and if it goes 7 its anyones game. So lets finish it off tonight and get banner 17

There is no way this is going 7 games...I also predicted Celts in 6...The Garden will be rocking tonight and KG will have a monster game...Keep Rondo out of there...The guy has no confidence in his jump shot and when he passed up that layup last game I was disgusted...Not to mention I can't stand Pau Gasol...That guy drives me crazy...All he does is whine and complain...We end this tonight!!!

Celtics need to win, so that I can return to regular sleep patterns. Waking up at 2am and going back to sleep at 5am is not fun.

Celtics right now are the better team. NO ONE on the lakers can cover pierce. We need to go to him early and often and he needs to take it to the hole rather than settle for jumpers.

The key to this game is which team can get to the line and force the other team into foul trouble.

KG and Pierce should be pounding down low with ray allen staying on the wings. I hate to say it, but rondo may have to be relegated to the bench if he can not make jumpers. We just can not afford to have Kobe not working on D and roaming and helping.

DK,
I am worried about game 6 - althouhg I am predicting the Celts will earn the 17th banner with a 102-98 triumph.
I completely agree with you regarding Perk. Great pick and roll defender and does a tremendous job of containing his guy on the glass. The Lakers had more 2nd chance points and inside baskets in game 5 than I remember them having in the previous games combined.
Tonight is a chance for KG to silence his critics. He is proving to me why he never won anything in Minnesota. He is a great complementary player - but he is not the go to guy. Pierce has clearly been the man for the C's. KG's a beast down low when he gets the mentality that he will not be denied. Pau Gasol in single coverage - are you kidding me? Missing big free throws - getting into foul trouble in a title game with some ticky tack fouls?
ABC is promoting him as though he is the Celtics best player and right now he is the third best player on their team behind PP and Ray Allen. He can really cement his legacy and silence the critics with a monster game 6. If he does not come up big (and settles for 18 foot jumpers) we will see you on Thursday.

I have said all along that the NBA wants this to go 7, but with the new focus on the refs fixing games I think it will be honestly officiated and the Celts will win. Kobe will have his best scoring game of the series with 54 points, but the rest of the team will just stand around and watch him. Celts win by 4 in double-overtime.
KG hits winning shot but Pierce is game/series MVP.

The problem with Rondo is that he does not have that shooter's mentality to keep shooting and know that sooner or later they will start to fall. Even if he makes 2 shots in a row as soon as he misses one he is all done. His confidence is zero and he can't hit another shot. Passing up that layup was infuriating. I was glad to see Doc immediately get House off the bench after that play. It is also infuriating to see Cassell hoist up shots the second he touches the ball anywhere within 40 ft of the basket. I don't mind him shooting, but I'd like to see them work the ball around for a better shot.

I'd also love to see Big Baby get in the game for about 3 minutes in the first half for some hard fouls, boxing out and overall excitement. I think it would fire up the crowd to see him go hard against Gasol and grab a rebound or two or give a hard foul to any of those annoying guards or dive on the ground for a loose ball.

First off, love the Chess King reference, I am still laughing about that one, and the Vujacic is a soccer mom from the last posts. Both dead on.

Next, stop bashing Garnett. He has struggled in the last days, but weren't you all complaining less than a month ago that he should've won MVP over Kobe, and that stats are too much of a determination. Do you think we'd be one game from being the fairest in the land, if we had just picked up Ray, and were looking at Gerald Green for consistency?....

What he is doing wrong is simple.

Be selective on 15 - 19 foot jumpers (which he has Started to be better about),

When he get the ball in the block, he ALWAYS turns to the center of the court, and NEVER baseline, switch that up and he has another 8 - 10 points a game,

on top of that, he usually tops it off with fading away.... that up and under (the few times he has done it, has killed 'em)

Big agreement that it will help having Perk in a huge way back. I almost think Doc planned it, that if we lost we could still have the boost, of having the big guy in. His physical presence, rebounding, defense, and even in this situation his [controlled] whining, I think will raise teammates energy.

Pau is shook [of him] and Lamar is a shell of a man. Nothing to do with Perk, but a shell of a man nonetheless. Fuck Farmar, I hope he finds a wet spot on the parquet and hydroplanes into the feet of Randy Moss, at which point lil' House stomps him out. Just a dream...

Lastly, Pierce cannot be covered by anyone on the Lakers. It pisses me off when this is said about Kobe, he gets the ball like 15 -17 away from the hoop, while Pierce gets it top of the key, it is known he is taking it, either straight to the rack, or part way and pulling up (this obviously doesn't include the open 3s he takes, and has been drilling). All the while Kobe complaining that he is quadruple and quintuple teamed. A Complete Lie. It is called help-defense, you haven't seen more than 2 guys solely on you the whole series. Quit your endless bitching. (sorry for length)

Luke said...

I also, and this is the last thing I'll say, am now liking Doc as a coach. It has always been my view that he is absolutely terrible at calling timeouts at the right time. Instead he lets it linger, lets the other team gain momentum, and then after the fact call a basically posthumous timeout, when the ditch has become a well.

Apart from that, I love the balance he has shown with the lineup especially as of late. Last game, he definitely improved on his timeout selection though he is still not perfect. At least he is moving in the right direction, and did a great job of it.

Why I am encouraged along with us getting ahead of the super-droughts with timeouts?! Last game, though we found ourselves down, we came out super high energy. Our offense was atrocious, but the reason they were scoring was not terrible defense, and they are not gonna come out shooting 80% again. Tonight is the night to put the Jungle in the category of the Garden, not in our house.

1 game from glory, only a few short hours from Kobe throwing his teammates under the bus.... again, and a couple weeks (depending on his faith in Bynum) from his next trade demand. Time to force the hand.

PolarBear said...

Luke,
I dont think anyone is bashing Garnett. As I mentioned, he is a GREAT complementary player and was a legit MVP candidate for the regular season - but he has never proven to be a guy that will throw the team on his back and carry you down the stretch in the playoffs (like a Pierce or Kobe who always find a way to get to the rim and/or the foul line).
With the exception of one instance in Minnesota (game 7 vs Kings) he has not been able to carry a team in big spots.
He is going against Pau Gasol and should be able to dominate him on the offensive block.
Having said that, without Garnett, we would not be in this position - but I do think it is fair to say that he is not rising to the ocassion in the Finals and he is not the guy I want taking a big shot/free throw down the stretch.

Scottie Pippen couldn't carry the load without Jordan - I put KG in that same category. Not bashing - just reality - he is the Pippen to Pierce's Jordan - if you will.
That earned those guys 6 rings - let's hope it will earn the Celts a ring tonight.

JBS said...

Great, lengthy postings by everyone. Good stuff. I think the Celtics win the game like the Lakers did last game. A close, nail biter down to the wire, with the Celts making more plays at the end. Antoine Walker and Curt Schilling rush the floor and carry Pierce on their shoulders, while Doc Rivers is given a piggy back by Belichick to the podium. A lot of crying (by Walpole Joe and Ray Allen) ensues. I hope Larry Bird gets to this game.

You all have 1 hour to finish this for a chance to go tonight:
https://www.celebritiesforcharity.org/raffles/netraffle_main.cfm

mitch said...

I think the C's win tonight. I know the close-out game is the hardest to win, but I just think they don't get out to a slow start, and open it up in the 4th quarter. I think the C's D is just too good at home.

Luke said...

No foul trouble tonight... it's on.
What Garnett does on defense, can't be measured.

PB- I won't (on the Garnett is Pippen, and Pierce is Jordan) on either account. You are right about Kobe and Pierce being able to get to the free throw line, and throw the team on there back. But who has Garnett had to throw on his back in the Minn days.... whatever - it's an old argument for a different day.
Of course I would rather have Pierce taking it at the end, and don't want KG taking a free throw at the end of the game after last games performance, that is a given & obvious.

Right now, I am looking forward to Phil Jackson's next [and hopefully last] retirement.
And want to see Garnett playing more like Duncan on the block, by making Pau pay, and a lot of use of the up and under. Footwork is key, and with Perk on the other side of the block, there are few reasons for him to leave. Total mismatch.

(sidenote: KG shoots an unusually high percentage for a guy of his size from the free throw line(I think it is something right around 79, career- not to mention for a guy who didn't go to college. Which is one of the biggest things these high-schoolers going straight to the NBA miss out on. i.e. Lebron)

Luke said...

WJ, totally agree on giving Big Baby a shot, briefly, tonight.

DK said...

Luke, I'm not bashing KG, but I sure am bashing the way he's played lately, specifically in Game 5. SOFT SOFT SOFT. The Defensive Player of the Year allowed Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, 2 of the NBA's softest bigs, to combine for 14-20 shooting for 39 points. That is not getting the job done. I'm not even factoring in that horrible free throw shooting down the stretch (career FT% means nothing if you can't hit them when it counts). In Garnett's own words "I played like garbage", so I'm not saying anything he doesn't agree with himself.

He has had an amazing year and I absolutely love what he has brought to Boston. Clearly we wouldn't be in the position we are without him. But if he plays in Game 6 (and 7) like he did in Game 5 we are going to have to watch the Lakers celebrate on the parquet.

Just because somebody is great doesn't make them perfect and it doesn't make them free from criticism either. Everyone was certainly chiming in about Ray Allen when he wasn't playing well. KG is no different.

And not that it matters but I didn't, and don't, think he should have won MVP and posted on this site saying just that. (My vote went to Chris Paul with LeBron as runner-up).

DK said...

CONSPIRACY THEORY.....

Perkins goes out today, playing with a shoulder injury that should keep him out, and gives Gasol a McHale clothesline right off the bat. He gets a Flagrant 2 (tossed + 1 game suspension) but it doesn't matter because he couldn't play anyway. Set's the tone for the game and the C's cruise to a win. I'd love to see it.

DK said...

Also....Gator & WJ I totally agree with the comments about Rondo passing up that layup. It drove me nuts. If he isn't going to take that shot he shouldn't be in the game. Great move by Doc to yank him soon after. He will either be much more aggressive tonight or be riding pine.

jbs said...

I have never seen anyone deserve a ring less than Kobe....ever. I despise him.

Luke said...

Garnett is not free from criticism. After game 5 everyone who I saw right after, and read immediately after seemed like they were in panic mode. I was not at all feeling worse than before the game. At all.
If KG hadn't gotten all those BS calls, Odom and Gasol would have been less effective. There were at least 2, the perfect, clean, block comes immediately to mind. And when you are sitting the entire 2nd quarter it makes it hard to play D.

The game was called terribly, favoring Lakers not surprisingly, as so many have (not just to them and the home team) - and even with that if they had made the right call on Kobe's clutch "steal," we still would have had a GREAT shot to win. We were up 3 - 1. Another stat I would've been ecstatic to hear before, and only GMac, I believe had the balls to pick 5... a goal almost attained. So as you said DK, no one is perfect, Garnett had a terrible game, helped by the NBA/Laker refs, I am just not ready to throw him under the bus about it. No, he's not playing like Pierce, or even Ray, but Very few do on this stage.

5 fouls Pierce, 5 fouls Garnett, Allen foul out. Not gonna happen here. Sticking to my not going less than 6, still love Garnett and Pierce, despite each of them having had a terrible game.

Luke said...

For the record, I think Garnett is better than Pippen, and Jordan better than Pierce obviously, though one thing I have been saying for a decade at least is that Pierce is the player most like Jordan in this sense, Jordan always got 10 - 13 points a game from the free throw line - great ability to get fouled, nail em from the line, and get rest at the same time. There has been no player in the post-Jordan era who has emulated this skill so well.
I don't want to talk non-Celtics today, but someday I'll share my Pippen, Richard Jefferson comparison with you...

Luke said...

Kobe's steal 90% Pierce, 10% ball.

DK said...

Luke, we are in agreement that KG is still awesome and the refs sucked. One of my most frustrating moments in Game 5 came when Van Gundy said a Garnett foul was a terrible play by KG. And after replays showed it wasn't really a foul he said "it was still a dumb play by Garnett". How is a non-foul that the refs blew a bad play? Agreed, foul trouble hurt him and the refs stunk but he brought at least a little of it on himself.

Also, I look forward to a future Scottie Pippen debate. One of the most underappreciated players in NBA history. Bring it!

As for me picking the C's in 6, I'd rather be right than "have balls". Let's hope I am. I wouldn't be able to stand a Game 7.

DK said...

And IF the C's lose tonight I am going to have to change my vote in the "most stressful series" poll from Cavs to Lakers quickly.

Luke said...

Completely agreed, on your Cavs to Lakers change without a win tonight, I am in exactly the same boat.
You actually really covered all the bases, cause even though you picked CP3 and Lebron as a runner up, your picture for the article was KG. My pick, and my sole pick was Chris Paul.
KG, did have errors/brought some on himself.

Pippen and your underappreciated debate, good lord, don't get me started, you are going down!

Also, though you originally said 6, you picked them in 5 before last game you picked the C's in "an absolute blowout, 104 -82" again covering all the bases. I'm not hating, just saying some of us only have the luxury of making one pick, and sticking to it the whole way through. Though you may find good company in Bill Walton. :)

(I also, though I admire the pick, disputed the C's in 5 notion more than/and before anyone if you recall)

Luke said...

I'm heading down to the arena now.. so don't mistake non-responses tonight, for somehow getting me quiet, as that will never happen.

DK said...

My MVP pick was clearly Paul. There was a pic of KG because it's a Boston website and my post was about him not winning the MVP and that it was deservedly not given to him.

As for the Game 6 & Game 5 picks...well, you got me there. But it's so much easier to look brilliant if you give yourself two chances to do it!

DK said...

..and I certainly hope we never keep you quiet Luke. Good debate is encouraged here...that's what makes it good. If I didn't appreciate that you wouldn't have been a finalist for the RBSF Hall of Fame!

KG just dislocated Ed Lacerte's elbow with a high 5.

JBS said...

What's the over/under on the # of cars set on fire or tipped over in Boston? Since colleges are done for the year my guess is three.

DK said...

Where the hell did Big Baby pull that out of?

gmac said...

Kobe -35 is the best player on the planet? I thought the best player was supposed to not let his team lose in the Finals by 40.

Garnett: I stand by everything I said.

(did you see that one-handed 3 point play!!!!!)

DK said...

Luke, I stand by everything I said too. If KG played like he did in Game 5 we would have lost. But he played like a beast and the Celtics are World Champs!!!

Luke said...

Dude nobody plays well every game. That's not the nature of sports. I'll take him in a free throw competition against you 10 of 10 times. Get over game 5, we were in a position better than we could've hoped for, and personally, I'm glad we came back to Boston to win so demonstratively, rather than eek one out in LA.

Last night?? We wouldn't have lost if Garnett was over at my house taking shots and smoking cigars.

Also, I know you love stats: Game 5, 6 for 11 from the floor, 14 rebounds, 13 points. With 2 steals. Far from a horrible game. I already acknowledged he could've played better, but Joey Crawford could've stopped babysitting Kobe and friends too.
You're caught up on 3 free throws.
I'm celebrating. This debate is done.

"What can you say now."
