Finally!

Posted by: Walpole Joe
21 years ago Ronald Reagan was your president, you were listening to your Joshua Tree or your Appetite for Destruction cassette on your Walkman, your shorts were short and your socks were high, you were wearing your Beat LA t-shirt, and your Boston Celtics were playing in their last NBA finals for the next 21 years.
Thanks to Paul Pierce taking charge in the fourth quarter and excellent team defense the Celtics moved past the Pistons (the same team they beat 21 years ago) to secure their spot in the finals against the Lakers (the same team they played 21 years ago). Before we look ahead to the finals, here are half a dozen questions to ponder while we wait for Game 1 on Thursday to get here.
1. Who was your MVP of the series?
2. What grade do you give Doc for his coaching in this series?
3. Does Perk bring the bad calls on himself or are the refs out to get him?
4. Who is your least favorite Piston now that the series is over?
5. Which Piston would you like to see on the Celtics (if any)?
6. Who was the unsung hero for the Celtics this series?

1. Series MVP - Pierce. He was awesome all night, but he really took over in the fourth when we need him the most. He really looked like a leader.

2. Doc's grade - B+. I love to get on the guy, but he is in the finals and that is something only one other coach can say right now.

3. Perk - I think he is bringing it on himself by complaining about every play. He needs to be selective with his moaning or the refs will never listen to him. The refs don't want some young guy telling them what they are doing wrong.

4. Least favorite Piston - So many choices.....I have to stick with Richard 'Rip' Hamilton. I hate his name, hate his face mask, hate his over aggressive defense that the refs let him get away with, I hate everything about him.

5. Piston on the Celts? - I became a big fan of Rodney Stuckey this series even though he didn't play great tonight. As much as I like his game I don't think I liked it quite as much as the ESPN announcers did.

6. Unsung Hero - I have to go with my man James Posey. I wish Johnny Most were alive to scream "Posey steals the ball! Posey steals the ball!!" He played strong D and had some clutch plays.

I'm not going to answer the questions directly, but I needed to make a comment on the game:

Paul Pierce, what a change my friend. We've never been wooried about your talent, but your maturity record has not been exemplerary, especially in teh playoffs. Last night you showed not only your immense talent, but that you have grown as a player and as a man.

The aggregious call in the 3rd, calling Pierce for an offensive foul on an upfake 3 pointer that quickly created a 6 point swing, would have sent Pierce of 2002 into a tizzy. Fuck it would have sent me today into a tizzy. I would have been kicked out of the game immediately after that call. Pierce smiled incredulously and decided to stay calm but to take over the game. He channeled that call into 8 points in the last 8 minutes of the game. In doing so he gave me confidence that perhaps this Celtics team can close in the 4th quarter and perhaps having hope is warranted.

I toast PP today for being who we always wanted him to be.

MVP- Toss up either "the big ticket" or "the truth". KG has the numbers but Pierce closed out the series.

Doc's grade- B. he gets a B only because he was the coach when the C's made the Finals.

Perkins- Brings some of the calls on himself but i also think the refs have pretty terrible overall.

Least Fav- Phantom of the Palace aka Dick Hamilton aka flop master Rip.

Piston in Boston- Stuckey young and talented.

Unsung Hero- Perkins was great the entire series, when he can stay out of foul trouble he's a monster.

Celts v Lakers Finals. it doesnt get any better than this. Living outside of Boston and having your teams doing well is totally different than living up there. There you got other FANs here I get Spurs fans who think the C's dont have a chance against the Lakers cuz their team got beat by them.

BEAT L.A.!!!!!!!

Series MVP - KG. He didn't have his best game in Game 6, but he averages 23 & 10 for the series, 525 FG%, 811 FT%, 6 blocks, 5 steals.

DOC - A-minus. He did what I asked and played the starters more minutes as the series went on and used the bench only when they were effective. Can't ask for more.

PERK - Combo of both. When he entered the league he had lots of stupid fouls and now he has a bad rep. That hurts him way more then complaining. And though he is young he is a 5 year vet at this point.

LEAST FAV PISTON - Dick Hamilton, hands down.

PISTON ON CELTS - Sheed. I find him shockingly hilarious.

UNSUNG HERO - Perk. Game 5 was the biggest game of the series and he had the biggest game of his career.

By the way, thanks to Walpole Joe for taking care of the posting while I was away. Went fishing (first time ever) and caught a 20 inch, 5 lb Brown Trout. Listened to Game 6 on the radio in the middle of the woods. Not ideal, but still very exciting!
